Hey, I have a strange issue - I have the game installed on 2 computers on my Steam profile, savegames are not synced between the two. Cloud saves are activated in Steam on both. But I noticed, that on one machine, when I start a new game, my profile is my Steam profile, as usual. But on the other, it's "Public". I'm thinking this has something to do with the save game issues.

Any help?

Depends how you quit the game .
I usually go to main menu and wait until its synced is finished.
Then i quit and wait on steam that the sync is finished.
Then its fine.

I tried that, but it doesn't seem to be the issue. As I wrote, I'm playing from 2 different profiles across the 2 machines, and I don't know how to correct that.

I was doing the same .
I payed for 1 month subscription on boosteroid where i could play bg3 from steam.
And i have steam deck where i play it to.
For me this method was working.

I had the same issues when i quited the game from the actual playing. And dont waited until both in the game and steam cloud saves was in synchron.
Sometimes i lost the saves .
Also you need to enable cross save i think in option menu.

We must have different issues then, because it doesn't seem like it's a matter of me waiting for syncing, whether in game or in Steam.

Mybe check the name of the profile in game.
When i played on stadia
"what is dead and yes i payed twice for this game"
I created a profile with differnt name.
And when i buyed the game from steam i maked different profile name .
In this way it wasn't synced as well.

Oooor mybe you have saves form another pach. I mean technically its possible. To have patch 9 on one machine and patch 8 or whatever on the other one.

The profile names are indeed different. I don't know if I can create a different profile?!

Profiles were removed with patch 9
The profile now is Public
When you start a new game the campaign name is the characters name.

Right, except it doesn't work like that for me on one computer. When I start a new character, I'm still using my Steam profile with my Steam name and avatar, not the Public profile. And I think, because of that, save games are not syncing across the 2 machines.

I can't insert images, but essentially my one machine still works like before patch 9 apparently.

I think the main menu screen has the release number on it somewhere so you could check there whether the versions are the sam (alternatively you can press “Feedback” in the launcher to pop up a form that will auto-populate the version number). Saves are definitely not compatible across patches, so if patch 9 hasn’t been applied to one machine then that could explain the problem.

I know that it’s possible to keep playing on earlier versions of the game but have never tried this myself. But if you haven’t actively done this, then it’s odd if Steam isn’t finding any updates for it. Do you have it set to auto-update and have you tried manually checking for updates? I think there’s a “Betas” option in the Steam game properties that you use to continue playing older patches, so you could also check that that says “None” on the machine that seems to be running the older version.

I'll have to check the versions on both, one looked right, that's the one using my old profile.

the one that says public is correct its a script change from patch 9, now everyone has a single public profile and it mucks up the cross-save system because that is still scripted to use the old multi-profile code

new game saves should now be sorted by character name but they arn't always
autosave and quick save get dropped into the last character played [on that computer] so if you player character 2 on computer A, quicksave and change computers there is a good change that quicksave will be listed under character 1 instead of character 2... its a known/ reported issue causing all kinds of network problems both on Steam and Gog

Right. I'm still no nearer to understand what's going on. I've done a bunch of stuff, and deleted my Steam profile from the folders, but it's still being used on one PC. On the other PC, using Public profile, I don't have the Cross Saves option, so something's really effed up here.
