I really like Disguise Self, and I think it is very useful, too. You get new options too solve a problem, and you can avoid a lot of fights.
Disguising as a Drow, for example, makes it very easy whenever you interact with the Goblins, you do not even have to use the tadpole powers.

I like to play more "tricky" characters, for example a sorcerer with the charlatan background, and I use this spell quite often.

Exactly the same! "Trickster" and/or "Charlatan are often part of my characters description and I always pick the Disguise Self spell when I can (and feel naked without it). I've actually finally landed on one "canon" character that will meet all those elements ^^ It's not relevant here but I'm just happy about it 😁

Funny enough, in my case, if I play a Drow, I will most likely disguise as a "Surface Elf" or something else unless I'm inside the Shattered Sanctum or the Underdark.
a) Some consider Drow as kill on sight, like Damays and Nymessa (so, for safety reason)
b) Some become useless because they worship/adore you or something and you can't have fun anymore (the Goblins at the Goblin Camp).

Like for the rest of my decision, I always try to use it in a way that makes sense for my character.

That being said, I understand that companions or NPCs can't always react to Disguise Self.
That would be a lot, like a lot a lot, of work behind the scene.

If it happens, I would be ok with it, of course. It's just hard to conceive.

Sidenote : at the minute, there are a few instance where Disguise Self is being recognized, namely : approaching as a Gith 1) SH at the beach and 2) Ellyka (the Tiefling observing the gith patrol). So, maybe more to come (but only on very specific situations)?
