Any companion from 120 years ago still alive should be a high level NPC with a supporting role. Make room for new characters and a new story. Recycling Minsc and Jaheira (and de-leveling them for gameplay reasons) is only going to make them less legendary.
When I was talking about Edwin, Viconia, Jan, and Sarevok, it wasn't as party members. More like cameos. It IS a Baldur's Gate game after all.
