I do think it might be fun if companions would go off and do stuff without you if they’re not in the party later in the game, but would still rejoin you if they were free and had a high enough attitude. I can’t currently envisage any plot contrivance that rules out all but three party members at the end of act 1 being remotely satisfying.
I love this idea. This is actually a lot like how I play Baldur's Gate II. I have a few mainstays, and one or two slots for people to come and go as I do their personal quests.
Maybe we'll be given a number of different possible 'cures' and which one he choose to pursue, will determine who's on board.
