I started out gaming on old puzzle games like Myst and Riven on computer). Then discovered RPGs during Bioware’s heyday, and played all their RPG franchises. That got me into Witcher and Cyberpunk. Then, to scratch the rpg itch, I got into isometric rpgs like Planescape, DOS, and POE. Then super open world like Skyrim.
Later, I discovered FPS’s through forcing myself to get used to them by playing Bioshock (I wanted that story). I can enjoy an occasional FPS (tho not my favorite genre).
I also enjoy strategy games like XCOM alot. And I play a ton of puzzlers still (The Witness, Talos Principle, and Portal are highlights).
Also play endless amounts of AA games. Little atmospheric gems like Gorgoa, walking sims like Edith Finch, games with clever story telling devices like Unpacking and Orwell, and weird games like Fran Bow and Soma that stick with you. I honestly get the most pleasure these days from AA games. They focus on a few things and do it well. Primordia and The Fall are standouts.
So honestly, I play just about everything. Even sandboxes like Assasins Creed and Mad Max and Hogwarts Legacy are ok, tho I find Fallout a bit lifeless.
