It's not an MMO.
As I said, bard is a jack-of-all-trades. He can do a bit of buffing, debuffing, he has some spells. If you are looking for a dedicated spellcaster, than yes, cleric/sorcerer/wizard would be a better choice. Currently in BG3 sorcerer is rather OP, so yes it is a no brainer choice if effectiveness is your primary concern. I wouldn't necessarity argue that bard feels like a suboptimal choice in a limited party of 4, but now we are getting dangerously close to comaplining about party size.
Keep in mind that bardic inspiration is an extra resource, seperate from spell casts and that is used as bonus action. I think that once you play a bit with it, you will find it quite useful.
