Following
this WolfheartFPS vid worked for me. At least so far. I’ve not run through the full game using this custom party workaround yet, though I’ve already noticed some of the niggles Silver mentions.

I prefer to play with my own custom party. I don't know about standard companions, but with custom party companions you can go through many dialogues several times and always choose different answer options. (However, some initial dialogues are only possible once in total and not per custom character, hence always save before!)
