Even if it's timed exclusive, this sucks. I didn't think Larian would ever do it and make it release on PlayStation 5 a console exclusive. From what I've seen on twitter, people are not happy and larian is not answering anyone.

From the article linked below:

"Larian Studios will not "participate in the exclusivity game" with Baldur's Gate III"

"The long awaited RPG sequel will not be exclusive to Google Stadia or any other platform"

bg3 exclusivity

Maybe i read it wrong ... but all i see in that article is that BG-3 was never supposed to be exclusively on Stadia ...
And it never was ...

So ... to me it seems like they kept their word. O_o

Not that I have a personal stake, as I don’t have either console, but has it been confirmed that BG3 won’t be coming to XBox? The only mention of exclusivity I can find mentioned in any news article so far is current generation exclusivity, ie not PS4. But perhaps more was said in the State of Play segment?

Looking at SteamDB, Larian is testing DX12 compatibility, which doesn't make sense for PC since any card that support DX12 also support the already implemented Vulkan API. Putting my tinfoil hat on, I think this might be for Xbox consoles.

BG3 releases on at least two different stores on PC, Mac, GeForce Now and PS5. Since when multi-platform release is an exclusivity?

Of course XBOX is missing as an obvious platform, but:
1) we don’t know for sure it won’t be releasing on XBOX on launch
2) if it doesn’t we don’t know reasons for it.

Remember that XBOX has two consoles and they seem to demand for games to run on both of them (at least from first party studios? I honestly don’t follow consoles enough to know). Optimising game for two additional consoles, one of which is underpowered, would be an additional undertaking.

To be fair, PS5 has two revisions too!

They are the same console though, no? XBOX X and S on the other hand are different consoles with different specs.

I'm definitely disappointed at the lack of an Xbox announcement. Hopefully this doesn't end up as an exclusive (times or otherwise). I've always heard it's much easier to port from PC to Xbox since the Xbox is basically a PC anyway, so it seems odd they wouldn't have an Xbox version.

Everyone is so concerned about MS getting Call of Duty. In my opinion this is much worse :P

Given that this latest update is specifically tied to BG3’s featuring in the PlayStation State of Play stream, I guess it makes sense that an XBox announcement isn’t part of it. But as long as there’s not been an official announcement that BG3 won’t be out on XBox there still seems to be room for optimism there’ll be another announcement in due course.

PS5 pro has a better hardware : more core, more RAM, better GPU that the base PS5.

Console exclusive is a form of exclusivity.

Even more if you consider both Divinity 1 and 2 released on Xbox and PlayStation.

Isn’t Windows new “philosophy” that both PC and Xbox are a single ecosystem? What works on one will have to work on both (save can be played on either etc) This may only be for in-house games like Starfield.

I am a PC person myself, but this does seem odd.

I don't understand the complaint, unless you're an exclusive X-box user and hate Playstation.
We played on Stadia, then it went away.
So we started looking into buying PCs.
Found Boosteroid and started playing there for $10/mo each.
Then found GFN was compatible and were thinking of switching.

Now we have the option to buy a PS5 and play split screen as we always wanted to. We'll still have to buy a new console, but we won't have to spend ~$3k on 2 new gaming PCs, or spend $20 - $40 / month for a service instead of hardware that we'll own.

So I don't understand the downside to also releasing on PS5, even if it's not coming to X-Box / Switch (yet?). If you only play on X-box or Switch, then you wouldn't be playing anyway, unless on GFN etc. So what is the problem?

Sounds reasonable to assume we’ll be getting another announcement in future smile

Not on launch though, though I get the console wars.

Further clarification.

Following yesterday’s PS5 and release date announcement, we’ve clarified that right now, we’re planning to release Baldur’s Gate 3 for PC, Mac, GeForce NOW and PS5. That said, we have no exclusivity for which platforms we can bring BG3 to, or when, and will announce support for additional platforms if and when we’re ready.

We’re seeing a lot of varied interpretations of what that means, so we wanted to clarify further. We’ve had an Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 in development for some time now. We’ve run into some technical issues in developing the Xbox port that have stopped us feeling 100% confident in announcing it until we’re certain we’ve found the right solutions – specifically, we’ve been unable to get splitscreen co-op to work to the same standard on both Xbox Series X and S, which is a requirement for us to ship.

There’s no platform exclusivity preventing us from releasing BG3 on Xbox day and date, should that be a technical possibility. If and when we do announce further platforms, we want to make sure each version lives up to our standards & expectations.

It still is, but in this case it would be called "console launch exclusive", which is similar to timed console exclusive. I didn't make this term lol I don't recall if it was used first by Sony or Ms.

It was announced during state of play for playstation. It wouldn't be announced for Xbox during a playstation event.

And also, you have no idea if the game will launch only on one console or not yet.

Fortunately, as per @Wormerine’s post above, we have now had confirmation that there is no sort of console exclusive planned for BG3, and the lack of XBox announcement is instead due to technical difficulties getting split screen coop working on both XBox versions.

Hopefully these will be resolved and we’ll get an XBox release date soon.
