I'm kind of curious as to why you want to know where all the crab apple trees in the game are. Malus is not a bad result but a type of tree. Sorry.
As for the negative effects of being non proficient, yes some clarity as to the penalties involved would be useful, but if you are playing a game based on the rules set of another game it might be a good idea to at least have a working knowledge of the systems being used.
Personally I would prefer it that, if I can't use an item, then I shouldn't be able to equip it
