No portraits in a Baldur's Gate game really kills the <immersiveness> for me. NOTHING the current 3D character creation can do will replace a hand drawn portrait. One of the first things I'll MOD in. My fav art pack (for BG2) : Actually was looking forward to custom made portrait mods. Can't wait to see what people come up with.

This new short video gives me so much hopes about portraits !! Looks like some kind of "mercenaries" system, Withers saying something like "do you need a new ally" before the screen showing selectable portraits of... I guess pre-made characters. https://twitter.com/larianstudios/status/1661401801407574018

Yep, looks like “hirelings” are reconfirmed, though it’s not clear whether they’re fully customisable and those were ones created earlier, we are limited to pre-made characters, or somewhere in the middle. Still, as you say, hopeful both on that front and for more interesting character portraits!

Not to mention the origin's portraits that are already in the games files...

it seem like good news for yall? new portrait system and naming system? https://twitter.com/larianstudios/status/1661401801407574018?s=20Specifically the tweet announced hirelings - non-companion party members. Such features was present in both D:OS1&2. Now the screenshot you pulled might suggest that we might not be able to create custom merceneries - or at least there will be a selection of pre-made ones. More relevant to the topic - the portraits look good! The question is, are those generatable? Or are those pre-made for pre-made merceneries (and presumably companions?) With so many NPC in the game I hope they build a system for creating nicer portraits that we will be able to use as well.

I'd say that it is pre-made characters, but for which we can fully custom their class and abilities and so on (like all companions in DoS2 IIRC). It could be dissapointing to some players, but if those pre-made characters have a "small" story /quest that is not at all defined by their class, it could be a really cool middle ground between origin and the usual blank slates mercrenaries.
I just hope they are not all "dead people with an unaccomplished mission". It would be a cool background for a companion to be honnest, I love the idea. But I would appreciate it even more if most of the non-origin companions had a unique background rooted in current events.

There’s something odd about the link, try looking for other more recent tweets from Larian and you’ll find the one that talks about hirelings. (I tried to share the link to the right tweet, too, but the same thing happened as to Maximuuus and it just went to that one showcasing animating dead.)

Wait, so the hirelings and the 'summon help from the grave' are completely separate? That's weird, the post doesn't make it seem like that at all.
edit:
Also, Withers really is going to be a thing isn't he? He's not just a place holder. Okay, my new goal is to do the opposite of what the game wants me to. No SH, no Withers lol. Let's see how weird it gets.

There is an earlier tweet about raising dead, but you’re right the hireling one also talks about the souls of the dead. Yep, looks as though Withers is going to be the source of our custom hirelings (or at least some of them). I wasn’t expecting that, though personally I don’t have any objection to the idea. Happy to see how it works in practice.

The souls of the damned? Call in favors from the grave? wtf is this? I just want NORMAL companions to party with.. Have you seen BG3? Everything has to be EXTREME. It sounds like maybe we will be drawing recruits from the Blood War? It would be very over the top, but in line with companions we are likely to recruit.

Wither has nothing to do with that.

So ... Im the only one who thinks its not directly related?
That its just a Joke from Larian about returning Custom Characters, or Mercenaries from dead after our Origin companions killed them bcs they disagreed too much?
I still dont understand why cant we change Race for our hirelings. Lets us play Githyanki as racist as they trully are!
