In fact I could do without a vampire companion too when it's just slapped on top without a reason aside from "vampires are cool".
I've said it before - in fact, I suspect we've all said our lines before at this stage - but Astarion's status as a vampire spawn means that he uniquely has a rationale for controlling rather than dispensing with the tadpole, given it has given him freedom from his master and the ability to experience sunlight for the first time in centuries. We may or may not find that a compelling story, but there's certainly more reason than "vampires are cool".
But my apologies for digressing. If anyone does want to discuss companions in more detail, I'd suggest creating a new thread or resurrecting an old one on the topic, such as this one.
