Im not really sure if this can be done easily ...
I mean, if you create Drow Noble ... it makes no sense for you to own a house in Baldur's Gate, while having Underdark origin tag ... and even that would make more sense than Githyanki Noble ... or even worse Githyanki Noble owning a house in Baldur's Gate, while using all those clueless dialogue choices about Faerun . xD
I think house would be quite fine ... Mansion or Keep sounds like a little overkill to me tho.
Again tho, i dont see how to tie it properly with backgrounds ... basicaly nobody except maybe Urchin or Outlander should be homeless ... and even those two may have house, since person who lived on street til their 20' can have Urchin background, while now being regular citizen with work and home.

House does seem like nice touch ... but many characters would make it quite messy ...
The only way i can think about would be giving house as a reward for some big quest ... wich would only change for our [BALDURIAN] taged characters that they are not "rewarding" us with this house, more like "returning it" to us as a reward, after it was confiscated for our long absence.
I bet there will still be people complaining about that their character is from Yartar, or Waterdeep, or Neverwinter, or w/e other place they want ... but hey, cant satisfy everyone.
So either that ... or adding check box in character creation:
Owning a house in Baldur's Gate? Y/N
Y > Sory, it was confiscated ... but if you help us, we can do something about it.
N > Hey, would you like to get a house?
