Yes, for early access it's a workaround that involves running multiple instances of the game to create custom characters as though starting a multiplayer game, after which you can revert to a single instance of the game. It was tough on my computer creating a party of four (I had to turn all the settings right down low), but a party of two wouldn't be so bad.

We're of course hoping for something more convenient and official for custom party members come August, but as has been mentioned we're still waiting to find out what that looks like.
