I wouldn't be shocked if D&D would turn out to be directed toward a similar fate and people would start regretting asking for that degree of freedom in the long run.
Wouldn't be shocked either - it's fun to break the rules, it's fun understand them well enough to find exploits and loopholes but "just do whatever" isn't all that fun. You want rules to break.
