I have the same problem. 2-5 sec freeze at irregular intervals caused by 100% CPU utilization. No matter graphics quality, (fake) fullscreen or resolution. I have tried every half-baked solution that Google could offer me in a hurry, without result.
Do you have Shell Infrastructure Host going in your processes tab? Check it the next time you experience the freezes. Ending it manually could fix the problem.
