We see their hitpoints and percentage chance to hit. Always. So no point bringing up your "just limit yourself" argument unless you're going to advocate playing the game blindfolded.
This is similar to the 4 or 6 party member argument. If we have the 400 camp supply thing then everyone is stuck with it whether they want it or not. If we have the current 40 camp supply limit then both sides can still rest whenever they wish.
IMO the entire eating and resting thing is badly done. We don't get hungry and we don't(?) get tired. In fact the whole transporting to a magic camp thing is a bit naff IMO.
You also get into the realm of "I want 50", "I want 100", "I want 273", etc.
