I feel like your fake identity is a good call with the flaying. It is a lot of effort to go to for no other apparent reason. Even as a warning the dragonborn was ditched in water and may never have even come ashore so poor way to make a display. The only other thought I had would be some sort of spell components or ritual components but why would you need all the scales.

With the insight park killing I wonder if we are reading too much into it? Maybe the victim was thrown into the hedge and stabbed with the ritual dagger and the magic bit is just related to the ritual dagger? This would make the cause of death more consistent (strength based anchor, bashed, hung) with one use of breath weapon. This then fits with a strong dragonborn sorcerer using disguise self to slip in and out and relying mostly on the physical prowess for the murders.

It is the symbol of Ilmater, a pair of hands bound at the wrist with a red cord.

The mortician's notes say "Felson Felgrim, was found entangled in a hedge and died from slashing damage. The mortician notes the slashes are indicative of thorns rather than a dagger. On your visit to Insight Park, the druid believed a spellcaster used nature itself to kill the victim." so unfortunately it does look as though the dagger isn't implicated in the actual cause of death here. Unless some of the slashes were with a dagger and the thorns were used to disguise that fact, perhaps?

Unfortunately, I'm being no more decisive this morning than I was last night. I'm very aware that if Rourke is indeed leaving the city, this might be our last chance to catch him. But it's also possible that we missed our chance by not going to Saint Sollars Way yesterday and we'd be wasting our time following him (and Mrs Leventide) and would be better following up on a different lead. And indeed that they're not leaving the city at all but are going to hide out at Riverveins or with the Guild so we'll find them later. Argh! Can't decide.

Darn, ok well I am still confused about that killing then as things like spike growth or wall of thorns are not usually available to sorcerers. Animate Object seems contraversial.
It is gone now but when I clicked on Mrs Leventide's house it said she had left the city and this location was no longer available so I think that trail with her and Rouke has run dry (presumably they left together).
I voted for returning to the cemetary, I feel like that deceased dragonborn is the key to finding the white dragonborn who if nothing else seems like they are going to try and frame us for a crime (presumably murder).

I couldn't find a definitive answer if plants are considered objects in this case in DnD either.

Or maybe the Dragonborn is multiclassing 😉

Edit: If it was the Dragonborn, that is.

He he, yes maybe each murder was just the dragonborn trying out a new class wink

Its just hard to see how a druid or ranger would fit into the murder of a gambler in a major city, where as all the others seem mechanistically easy for a strong dragonborn with some sorcery abilities to carry out. But obviously a young dragonborn may just be a single agent among many serving some greater purpose and perhaps there are some monsters that have similar abilities (eg forest hags seem to).

Yes, I can well imagine that, too. Maybe a Sea Hag is involved? There are the Riverveins tunnels and caverns, and the sewers - maybe a Sea Hag has a lair there somewhere?

I thought the symbol of Ilmater was a weeping eye, or is that someone else. Anyway, it's moot now that things seem to be coming to a head. Crane is the head of the Guild then, I must have missed that, so they thought we were fencing the dagger. Grom's inquiry was so indelicate because the killer's trying to frame everyone, yet a Dragonborn did show up at SS.

Considering the killer wants us to take the underground passageway, I voted for the Riverveins entrance hoping that it would head to the same place but not from the killer's expected direction.

Oh no! It's all hotting up now! Though I can't get a read on that gravedigger at all, it at least seems that a white dragonborn is now implicated in the gambler's murder as well.

Feels like we have a choice of two obvious traps at the Underground Passage and Riverveins. A possibly less obvious trap at Sewer Keep. Or just giving up and going home.

I'm stuck on the last one, as surely Drusilla's spirit realises we're going to be blamed for her murder and therefore the Flaming Fist will likely be staking it out. So why is she telling us to go there?

Fel is leading us to Riverveins, and his master is the one who threatened us. And he is the most likely suspect for stealing our talismans (talismen?) that were found by Drusilla. But I don't like that he's waving at us - trap.

The dragonborn is tempting us to the Underground Passage. That's definitely a trap.

Crane, the name that cropped up at Sorcerous Sundries as the person who perhaps wanted to sell the dagger we found, is at Sewer Keep. Presumably Crane isn't the dragonborn as the sorcerous sundries proprietor seemed to know him, so why just mention a "young white dragonborn" as the purchaser of the knife? Though presumably there's a connection between the dragonborn and Crane else why would the proprietor have assumed the latter was selling? But then why did Grom say the dagger was from Eastway Expeditions if it was from Sorcerous Sundries? We seem to have lost access to a bunch of locations so I can't check back!

Oh, and good call to everyone who said Magpie wasn't the one who gave us the letter!

I need to mull this over and see what everyone else thinks.

There are probably lots of daggers issued to multiple cult members? Grom has another of the daggers it seems, and is too simple to understand what kind of a cult she's a member of...?

It's possible Fel, as cult member/leader, told Grom to get a knife for ritual blood-letting, Grom not understanding the ramifications, went and asked for exactly that. It's also possible that Fel might have, under the guise of Magpie sold Grom the dagger, ensuring that Grom would be suspect number one when the murder happened. Or maybe Crane is also part of the cult, and is in on it, we haven't really investigated the guild enough to get a feel for there side of it.

I like that gung-ho attitude!

I'm not sure I'm brave enough to just plough straight in, though grin

What if Drusila is using the soul jar to jump from body to body?

We think she's been killed, but she's the true villain.

Thoughts?

oooh, Magic Jar murders is a great adventure plot. Of course, in this scenario Drusilla has been Cate all along. The entrance to the sewer system and a house boat gives the Jar some mobility, and access to all the murder scenes. I think there's a distance limitation to Magic Jar, but I don't remember...hang on. No distance requirement.

I think there are some difficulties with this, why didn't Selwyn, or anyone remember being in the jar. And maybe, why return Tav to his body, of course Drusilla might not want to be in there soon, and more than 100ft from the Magic Jar.

For some reason, Drusila doesn't want Tav involved. "I beg on you not to follow. Go home to Locklee Street and forget about being the hero of this story."

But won't the Flaming Fist be looking for us at Locklee Street?

And we are the hero of this story, aren't we?

*

I'm not convinced Drusila is a hag, but something's up with her, whatever's going on, Cate, and that urn.

*

Why these murders? A ritual for power? Sacrifice?

Do we see any connection to the Dead Three? To mind flayers or elder brains?

Personally, I don't think so, because of the 100 feet and line of sight limitations.

My suspects now are the White Dragonborn sorcerer (commiting the murders) and the top-hatted man/Fel (stealing our talismans, delivering the letter), but I think there is someone behind these two, this mysterious master. I could imagine it's something living in the tunnels and caverns of the Riverveins, or in the sewers - or maybe this is just where the base of their cult is located.
My first thought was that the top-hatted man/Fel could be a warlock, and since he has this sea creature skeleton pinned to his hat, his patron is something/someone sea-related.

If the Dragonborn had murdered Drusilla, and Fel had stolen our talismans, finding them on Drusilla's houseboat could maybe prove that these two work together.

I don't think I want to go back to our home. Even if the murderer (who I think most likely was the Dragonborn) did not use a spell to impersonate us before murdering Drusilla, somebody might have noticed that we rowed to the houseboat. Either way, we are the prime suspects.
I think the prophecy made by the Drawing Tree was indeed quite literal, I think the Dragonborn tries to frame us for murder by magically impersonating us. I'll trust that tree grin.

Both the Underground Passageway and Riverveins Entrance feel like traps, so there's only the Sewer Keep left...
I hope we still have some time left. I'm not brave enough to confront the Dragonborn or Top-Hat-Man alone, and I think I need more information on the sewers and everything underground, so I think I'll vote for Sewers Keep.
