lynn: Sorry. After all that I have gone through attempting to play this game, seeing so many people with similar problems, I cracked when Deathatthedoor falsely accussed me (excuss the pun). It won't happen again.

Raze, Lews, Jurak: Sorry, I don't know why you didn't get the reg. card? The ordering was from CDV Software in Germany. I am not from the USA/Canada region, so possibly the Europe "version" is different?

Deathatthedoor: "still it's no excuse to misspell my name twice in a row" - Sorry don't know what you exactly mean by that (except for possible sarcasm)? If you are referring to "moron", well, the last time I checked, "moron" was not spelt "morran", or "morron" as you strategically added. Could be a International english/American thing? Then again, maybe you just didn't spell it correctly.

"Why is he so angry if he owns the game anyway? If it worked once it can work again!" - Sorry, I know you have no reason to trust a single thing I say. But please remember, I had not given you any reason to accuse me. The mention of "crack" doesn't automatically mean I don't own the game.

Hi snobee. Did you read the list of precautions that Lynn made?
I recommend that you check the system settings again and tweak-down the audio and visual hardware acceleration a little bit.
HAL stands for hardware abstraction level and a game today cannot support any hardware directly because simply they are too many.

Direct X 9 and the older versions are HAL, yet completely software techniques can bypass the HAL acceleration and operate on audio and graphics secure standards.
Direct X is a standard HAL that shall not operate perfectly if the hardware manufacturer did not comply 100% with Intel-Micro Soft rules.

Let us say that you wish to run the game at 1024 x 768 and 16 bit colour but you normally operate at 1600 x 1200 x 32, then running the game would certainly demand switching resolution on the fly, right? On the other hand the music loads early to play during the options / quit screen and audio acceleration could crash the game if it was set at full acceleration (which was my only problem).

So if the game is running perfectly with so many players, then the problem is that your system is over rather than under qualified. Having a very advanced system comes with the penalty of having buggy drivers and low compatibility.
To make it compatible, all what you need, is to sacrifice the many new features you have that others do not have.
In the old good days we used to do such things by DOS batch files, to day you may need to save what MS calls hardware configurations and system settings restore.
They both need rebooting your OS while selecting the settings hampered down to be backwards compatible.

Trust me; the game runs perfectly at 20 fps and you shall never need to run it at 200 frames per second because your avatar shall fly not run.

For some reason I see 154 fps when I try the game in most modes. Well, I see that after the test.

Eldad: Thanks for the info. I actually did go through a minor/major adjusting of settings from resolution, color depth, audio acceleration, etc. As mentioned in my first post, I tried to read up and get as much info from others who had a similar problem and attempt their possible "cures".

I decided to reinstall one last time. I now can attack the Ork drum warriors without a crash... unfortunately, when I decided to use a crossbow and attempt a "hit and run" with one of the giant blue ork's (can't remember the name), the game crashed to desktop. I swopped to bow, and as soon as the first arrow is away... crash. ??? Restart computer, run divine divinity again... try bow... crash. Run divine divinity again... try crossbow... crash. I thought I should just play without using the bows, but after all the problems, whatif I get to another important point and it crashed?
Oh well, oneday when I change my system, I will try again.

Wait a minute snobee.
I hope you are not standing on your keyboard at those critical moments, are you?
I mean, do you get excited and hit ten keys along rather than the CTRL and the mouse left button, this could be a reason you know.
If it is not that bad, then why would a ranged weapon crash your system!
Do you see any arrows penetrating your monitor and hitting your coffee mug?

Ok, some seriousness now.
Do you install the game on drive c and in the default directory?
Does your system have any other kind of problems with the CD drive such as not finding it occasionally?
Do you smoke?
The last question is not a joke at all, because you shall be surprised to know that if you do smoke then clean your CD lens every day, and I mean every day, because the freaking technology cannot tolerate nicotine skin on lens; use 99% ethyl alcohol on the tip of an ear cleaner and you shall be very happy thence after.
Critical moments are only just events that a program may use to test authenticity of the game or load sound effects or load animations from hard disk. If you already took care of the acceleration problem, then you are left with run time loading events and authenticity checks. If only Orcish drummer (tough guy) or Orcish blue giants (another tough guy) are causing the problem, then reconsider my jokes above and try to control your emotions.
You might be shaking your laptop or your mother board, and next time Red Indian signals shall be observed to rise from the back slots.
Can you hunt rabbits in Aleroth with your bow as a test please?
Or try your bow on the frogs in the river too, and see if the system crashes or not.
We need data; we need input, input, because we are having a short circuit here, here, here, here.
………………………
Oink.

crazy... I had the exact same problem and the only way I could get the game to work is to install that crack like you did. Something just feels wrong of playing with a crack when the cd is in the damn cd rom.. oh well
