Hi there,
My spec: Winxp pro P4 2.4GHz HT Gigabyte 8IPE1000 (865 HT chipset with dual mememory) x2 256Mb 400MHz DDR 128Mb Leadtek A340 (FX5200) Sblive Audigy
I have updated ALL areas: Including WinXp SP1, critical updates, latest sound and graphics drivers, version 1.33, and then 1.34. Even the mb and graphics BIOS....
This is my story of woe and misery: Originally the game worked when I first installed it, but it suddently started crashing. When I clicked the divine divinity executable (via the shortcut or in windows explorer), the game would come up with a dark screen and then crash to the desktop. I spent the whole of yesterday uninstalling and reinstalling, and finally in desperation, I reinstalled my whole computer (with updates). The game started ok, but now when I go to start a previously saved game, as soon as I click the saved game in the load window... the game crashes to the desktop. I also started a new game... same problem!
I AM TIRED OF REINSTALLING!!! I AM SICK OF THIS BUG INFESTED PIECE OF S*%T!!!
Really, I never complain about a game, and with a collection of nearly 300 games, I have never had a game give me so much grief. It seems I wasted my money here. Even the old bug infested, and complained about "Crimson Skies" works perfectly....
Yes, I have read the other comments about saved game issues, but none have helped. Anyone care to come up with something new, besides telling me to move on and play something else.

I forgot to mention...
1. I have DX9 installed. 2. I also deleted the saved games and tried new ones. 3. I also had the WHOLE +/- 2.3Gb previous installation backed up to another "backup" computer on my lan, and copied the old saved games back (same version)... but they also didn't work. 4. After doing a fresh install, I even tried copying the whole "run" folder back after it gave problems.
Actually, if it finally "worked" I am thinking of not playing the game UNTIL there is an OFFICIAL patch to sort this out... how many of you spend days on this game, and then suddently have a problem and can't finish. Thankfully mine has only been at the start of the game.

Anthrax....maybe there is a crossreferencing of the dX files....why do you have two different versions of directx?
snobee.....did you check read/write permissions on the files that you copied?
have you both tried configuring DD with no smoothness, and no test? apply and close... the DD configuration tool is not the best in the world, and could be part of the problem!
hope this helps!

I don't play it in XP, I play it in 98 with no troubles at all, directx drivers don't even know that the other exists as the os's are on completely diferent hard drives....
I think that it maybe a direct x 9 issue!!!! but I'm not complaining as I can Play the game without crashes on 98

I use Win Xp... Never had a crash. I have DivX 9, btw. I remember I had the same error in Operation Flashpoint when I simply undercloaked my PC a bit in System Bios and the crashes stopped.
Snobee, you do have the last DD patch, don't you?

Deathatthedoor: Yeah, I have updated everything... that I know of. I finally tried a 1.34 crack executable, instead of just the original... and it worked!!! But, my joy was rather short as whenever I attacked one of those drum warrior ork guys, the game crashed. The solution was to obviously not attack them, but then I came across some guy who I decided to fight in a boxing ring... the game crashed each time I went into the ring. Well, that basically did it for me. There is no way in hell that I am going to play a game where I am just starting to enjoy it... and it crashes. Next thing it will crash at a point that is critical to the plot. I am disappointed. I don't know if I am wrong, but is it Larian Studios who developed the game? Well, I think I will stay clear of that name after this.

this couldn't be another noCD thing could it?
or by copying, did you check that the files were not read only?
i too have had my share of crashes, black maps, hanging on exit, monsters in the walls , but i still play the game too!
I found most of my problems come from the config tool....and that playing with the settings to get the best results usually works..... except i still can't exit while the game is paused...i've got to walk a step or two then choose exit......or "freeze mister" despite all it's drawbacks, which are relatively few....i really enjoy this game... and will continue to enjoy this game ...that is till and 2 comes out....then i will have a choice of great games to play...... quirky or not.....

Hmm... Why will someone use a No-CD crack unless he doesn't own the original game, eh? I won't flame no one, of course. Yet it would've been easier if you said you didn't have the original. Of course Larian wouldn't like that, would they?

f**k off death!!!!! I own the original game!!!! I paid good money for it. What right do you have to say I did not buy the game!!! You didn't even read my post properly!!!!! I VERY kindly told to you I had tried ALL means to play the game. THEN when YOU, the twit from hades, asked me IF I had applied the latest patch, I politly told you I had, EVEN though the stupid [nocando] should have known the answer after reading my first post. snobee, please take it easy... I can completely understand your frustration and we are very sorry for this. Please contact the Larian Support: support@larian.com It's very hard for us to follow the technical problems in the forum. Furthermore this is actually not the intention. We prefer that you take contact with us via email. That way, you'll get a faster answer. If you want, you can still email our support, and explain your problem and what you already did to solve it. Give your systems specs, patches you applied, and maybe have a look if there's a file called error.txt in the Run folder where you have installed, that might contain very helpful information. Hope you are still willing to contact us. And again we apologize for the inconvenience.

What is the pin like? Is this through CDV? They currently have merchandise for other games on their site, but not for Divinity (of course).

Thanks, but if he told me I am, I should be one, no? I mean he wouldn't say it unless he was sure I was, would he? Why is he so angry if he owns the game anyway? If it worked once it can work again!

lynn: Sorry. After all that I have gone through attempting to play this game, seeing so many people with similar problems, I cracked when Deathatthedoor falsely accussed me (excuss the pun). It won't happen again.
Raze, Lews, Jurak: Sorry, I don't know why you didn't get the reg. card? The ordering was from CDV Software in Germany. I am not from the USA/Canada region, so possibly the Europe "version" is different?
Deathatthedoor: "still it's no excuse to misspell my name twice in a row" - Sorry don't know what you exactly mean by that (except for possible sarcasm)? If you are referring to "moron", well, the last time I checked, "moron" was not spelt "morran", or "morron" as you strategically added. Could be a International english/American thing? Then again, maybe you just didn't spell it correctly.
"Why is he so angry if he owns the game anyway? If it worked once it can work again!" - Sorry, I know you have no reason to trust a single thing I say. But please remember, I had not given you any reason to accuse me. The mention of "crack" doesn't automatically mean I don't own the game.

Hi snobee. Did you read the list of precautions that Lynn made? I recommend that you check the system settings again and tweak-down the audio and visual hardware acceleration a little bit. HAL stands for hardware abstraction level and a game today cannot support any hardware directly because simply they are too many.
Direct X 9 and the older versions are HAL, yet completely software techniques can bypass the HAL acceleration and operate on audio and graphics secure standards. Direct X is a standard HAL that shall not operate perfectly if the hardware manufacturer did not comply 100% with Intel-Micro Soft rules.
Let us say that you wish to run the game at 1024 x 768 and 16 bit colour but you normally operate at 1600 x 1200 x 32, then running the game would certainly demand switching resolution on the fly, right? On the other hand the music loads early to play during the options / quit screen and audio acceleration could crash the game if it was set at full acceleration (which was my only problem).
So if the game is running perfectly with so many players, then the problem is that your system is over rather than under qualified. Having a very advanced system comes with the penalty of having buggy drivers and low compatibility. To make it compatible, all what you need, is to sacrifice the many new features you have that others do not have. In the old good days we used to do such things by DOS batch files, to day you may need to save what MS calls hardware configurations and system settings restore. They both need rebooting your OS while selecting the settings hampered down to be backwards compatible.
Trust me; the game runs perfectly at 20 fps and you shall never need to run it at 200 frames per second because your avatar shall fly not run.

Eldad: Thanks for the info. I actually did go through a minor/major adjusting of settings from resolution, color depth, audio acceleration, etc. As mentioned in my first post, I tried to read up and get as much info from others who had a similar problem and attempt their possible "cures".
I decided to reinstall one last time. I now can attack the Ork drum warriors without a crash... unfortunately, when I decided to use a crossbow and attempt a "hit and run" with one of the giant blue ork's (can't remember the name), the game crashed to desktop. I swopped to bow, and as soon as the first arrow is away... crash. ??? Restart computer, run divine divinity again... try bow... crash. Run divine divinity again... try crossbow... crash. I thought I should just play without using the bows, but after all the problems, whatif I get to another important point and it crashed? Oh well, oneday when I change my system, I will try again.

I thought I should just play without using the bows, but after all the problems, whatif I get to another important point and it crashed? Oh well, oneday when I change my system, I will try again. Wait a minute snobee. I hope you are not standing on your keyboard at those critical moments, are you? I mean, do you get excited and hit ten keys along rather than the CTRL and the mouse left button, this could be a reason you know. If it is not that bad, then why would a ranged weapon crash your system! Do you see any arrows penetrating your monitor and hitting your coffee mug? Ok, some seriousness now. Do you install the game on drive c and in the default directory? Does your system have any other kind of problems with the CD drive such as not finding it occasionally? Do you smoke? The last question is not a joke at all, because you shall be surprised to know that if you do smoke then clean your CD lens every day, and I mean every day, because the freaking technology cannot tolerate nicotine skin on lens; use 99% ethyl alcohol on the tip of an ear cleaner and you shall be very happy thence after. Critical moments are only just events that a program may use to test authenticity of the game or load sound effects or load animations from hard disk. If you already took care of the acceleration problem, then you are left with run time loading events and authenticity checks. If only Orcish drummer (tough guy) or Orcish blue giants (another tough guy) are causing the problem, then reconsider my jokes above and try to control your emotions. You might be shaking your laptop or your mother board, and next time Red Indian signals shall be observed to rise from the back slots. Can you hunt rabbits in Aleroth with your bow as a test please? Or try your bow on the frogs in the river too, and see if the system crashes or not. We need data; we need input, input, because we are having a short circuit here, here, here, here. ……………………… Oink.

crazy... I had the exact same problem and the only way I could get the game to work is to install that crack like you did. Something just feels wrong of playing with a crack when the cd is in the damn cd rom.. oh well
