As I continue to think about it I am starting to believe this particular origin will have much heavier ties into the original games than the regular custom character or other origin characters. Seems fairly obvious that you will be tied to Bhaal in some way and perhaps it emphasizes that part of the story far more.
I'm just not positive how much fun it will be to play if it is constantly reminding you (like if it modifies literally every dialogue and interaction) that you want to murder stuff.
As some other people have said it seems like a great option for a second play through. I imagine it changes quite a few things as you go through the game.

I still cannot fathom the thought process that lead to Larian deciding this edgy origin was exactly what the game needed over a new likeable companion character. There's still a chance there's depth to it we're not seeing yet, but I'm sure as hell not holding my breath. I'd say a good 4-5 companions are likeable, which is enough to fill out a party. I'm not sure what your requirements are, but Halsin, Karlach, and Minsc seem pretty much universally liked. Sprinkle in a Gale or Jaheira to taste, and you have a pretty decent selection of people that are nice. Plus it sounds like Wyll got a makeover and may have a choice up front to be a more likeable guy. Personally, I am really pleased with the idea of an entirely separate Origin for a Custom PC. I get that edgelord isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the fact that there is basically an entire different PC core plot option is huge. I can't think of a game that really does this. Obviously we have to see how it is implemented, but right now it seems comparable to playing through Mass Effect as Saren instead of Shepard, which is a really cool premise.

Wyll getting a do-over is probably my favorite thing to hear in the Panel from Hell. I like to hear that there's going to be some conflict even among the good characters, even if you can get around that and have them become friends later. Sounds promising.
Dark Urge.....eeeeeeh I am very wary about. It's obviously heavily inspired by the Bhaalspawn of BG I+II, and also seems to be content from defaultTav that got excised and made into its own thing. It's also much more....edgy than either the EA 'bloodthirsty' scenes Tav got, or the Bhaalspawn. It sounds like it's essentially just Tav but with their own story like the Origins....but honestly, that's how Tav *should* have been IMO, and I'm sad to see that it looks like Tav will just be a complete blank slate if my suspicions of it being taken from Tav are true.
The execution.....I'm going to be honest, it's a bit in your face, isn't it? I'm not sure how much I'm going to like having to make skill checks to avoid swing off party member's limbs after 20 hours of gameplay. The Bhaalspawn's bloodlust was much more subtle.
Unknown how well implemented this voodoo fey/goblin companion of ours is going to be. We already have the tadpole in our heads, I can see it potentially becoming obnoxious. It also seems like we won't be able to have a name for our character if we go this route? in the Stream they were just called 'The Dark Urge' IIRC.
Could be bad, I'm very wary. Shame this means we won't be getting another companion like Larian indicated.

I like it. I like that it's outside the box thinking. They saw an issue that folks had and made an effort to tackle it. It shows me that they're trying, and I respect that.
That said, there's certainly a dark slant to this. But if it works well, who knows, maybe we'll see more innovative ways of doing things like this.

It seemed to me like "The Dark Urge" was a title, not a name. Something to distinguish it from "Vanilla" Tav. I doubt you'll be introducing yourself to NPCs as The Dark Urge, as hilarious as that could be. "Nice to meet you Gale, my name is The Dark Urge, but my friends just call me The Urge." "Right then. Pleasure to meet you..."

"Nice to meet you Gale, my name is The Dark Urge, but my friends just call me The Urge." "Right then. Pleasure to meet you..." This is what I'm hoping for, yeah. But in the stream that is the name 'The Dark Urge' goes by, even when introducing themselves....which IDK, maybe that's the default name (instead of Tav) and you can change it, or it's the one they chose for the stream? Either way, I don't quite fancy going by 'The Dark Urge' for a 160 hour playthrough.

I am mostly excited for Dark Urge. Some people on the forum, myself included, were complaining that you could either have an in-depth origin with extra dialogue options tied to the story, OR a custom character, but not both. The concept behind Dark Urge seems to be giving you a custom character AND an in-story, in-depth, mystery origin attached to it reminiscent of the Bhaalspawn. It is an origin aimed at the complaints people like me had.
Would I have made it a "murderhobo" origin? Probably not, but you can resist the urge. It is not unlike the Bhaalspawn (And the Slayer was datamined IIRC).
My first playthrough will probably be a half neutral half good Dark Urge, and my second will be evil Gale.

Before anybody writes an indignant response, I’m just kidding and oversimplifying a bit. I fully appreciate that not everybody wants to be an edgelord.

You mock people, but simultaneously say "lul, jk" to ward off anyone calling out your mockery. So yea, this is my indignant response regardless of you 'joking'.

This totally changes how I want to do my first run. Initially it was halforc monk who goes team tadpole, but now I'm thinking dragonborn draconic sourc who's a goody-goody-let-me-help-you kind of dude with an unfortunate dark urge affliction

If you think a playful reference to a silly Darth Vader quote is being mocked in any significant way then you really need to lighten up. For real.

Though I have my doubts about the Dark Urg Origin, I am thrilled that Tav will not just be a non cannon place holder and only the Shadowhearts of the game will “live” on in the lore.

The Bhaalspawn's narrative didn't revolve around them constantly warding off violent urges to avoid going into a fugue state where they saw off people's arms. It was a bit more subtle, and had a quite a bit more buildup. Gale is one of the first people you meet right out of the prologue... the 'serial killer' aspect is pushed perhaps a little too far out the gate?
