Sorry, @Gray Ghost, but this change openly makes Gale more towards the evil side for me. He tried to usurp Mystra?!! That alone makes him the kind of megalomaniac I'd want to neutralize before it was too late (strike 1). You do realise that makes you a bad guy? Basically Judge Dredd. You would seem to be in appropriate company amongst the origin characters. So we should just let people commit horrific crimes against humainty, because stopping them would make us bad guys? So Ukraine are the bad guys for killing russians while trying to protect themselves? The Allies were the bad guys in WW2 for trying to stop the Germs? The Avengers were the Bad guys for killing Thanos? If that is the case, what should they have done differently? Cool story, but don't derail the thread please.

This may be far fetched ... But what are odds that Gale's name is actually Karsus? Seriously, and this would make Gale full on Evil. trying to usurp Mystra would have all kinds of catastrophic consequences for the realms even if he partially succeeded the Weave could collapse. If this was known every wizard would hunt him down and kill him. I feel so much better about all the times I knocked him unconscious and stole all his clothes.

Oh that description makes really not like him. If I ever need to sacrifice a companion he just jumped to the top of the list of sacrificial lambs. I am curious about what that orb is and what it does, specifically.

Yeah that whole worrying about innocents bit really screams evil to me, total monster Not only does it mention him caring about innocents, it also indicates that he once loved Mystra and then tried to usurp her. So it is unclear what his motivations were for trying to do so. They could perhaps be well intentioned things to save people, even if ultimately misguided. He doesn't have to try to usurp Mystra to be magical Hitler or something crazy like that.

It kinda makes sense. After all, most of what we know about Gale's unfortunate circumstances comes from the man himself. It would not be at all surprising if he has been misrepresenting his relationship with the goddess to earn our sympathy. Gale has all the charisma of a used car salesman or a corrupt politician.

If someone makes a claim that i find false i will respond to that, wether or not you think it's a "cool story". And since it was about Gales backstory it is in the right tread.

Gale has all the charisma of a used car salesman or a corrupt politician. You and I have very different reads on him. I find him charming and endearing. When it comes to the two imperiled tiefling kids in the grove, he seems to wear his heart on his sleeve. Similar with Saza, though his enthusiasm is less for her life than the conviction of standing in front of Arka's threat. And he has some great barks. "I think we already have the maximum number of theatrical titles." I love that line.

I think he was referring to your reference to the international political situation. Clearly you and I agree on your assessment of that, but that's not a universal assessment, and keeping everything here strictly apolitical is very much a goal

Sure, "with great power comes great responsibility" and all, but Gale (so far) doesn't use his charms to harm people - quite the opposite. He *is* arrogant, but not evil.

I don't hate Gale, but he screams "I'm trying badly to pretend I'm genuine." He's 100% bullshit and I treat him as such. That said, maybe his story will get more interesting, but when everyone has some crazy backstory, they all start to blend together as not that exciting.

I like Gale. Seems like a good guy to me.
Sounds like he's going through a lot. Must be super stressed out.
I like wizards, too.
I'm curious about his orb.
I'll play his storyline. Sure.
I think.
Eventually.
I mean, it does sound a little grandiose, doesn't it? A goddess? A love? Usurping divinity, getting cursed and stripped of power...?
Could he not have been fresh out of school and over ambitious so he tried to control an artifact that was way too powerful for him, and now...
But really, there's so much of his story I don't know. Maybe the grandiose stuff is actually good.
They could have changed things. There may be surprises and twists we don't understand yet.
Sure, I'll play Gale.
Definitely.
Might be fun.
I'll give it a try.
Eventually.

but when everyone has some crazy backstory, they all start to blend together as not that exciting. Definitely agree with this point. Don't want to get too far off topic, but I think games like Pillars of Eternity did a good job of this. I think it is awesome if some of the origins/companions have big, crazy, over the top stories. But I wish there were a few more "I'm just an adventurer who wants to tag along to help/have fun" types. They want to explore, they find you interesting and they themselves have interesting personalities - but the fate of the world is not resting on their shoulders. Same thing with having a couple of 'hired guns' who are only in it for the money, treasure, fame, etc. I think the big, grand, crazy stories are awesome. I'm excited to see what happens with most of the origins/companions - Gale included. Just wish there were more 'basic' or 'grounded' stories included with them as well.

That's the thing - basic wouldn't cut it. We are talking about a bunch of people who get kidnapped by a cult to become their "true souls". Who would you like on your side - a city guard or a badass barbarian straight from the Blood War? A grave robber or a vampire spawn? A random librarian or a former Chosen of Mystra?

Okay, if you think that its not at all inappropriate to bring politics for the discussion about Gale, then I'd personally ask you to not bring parallels like this. It might seem to you that you have some great clarity into the morals of the past and ongoing conflicts that can apply to the discussion, but to me this is kinda personal - I have friends fighting for their lives in one of the conflicts you mentioned. So speaking about who is right to kill who is not just words on the internet for me. And I am not talking about politics right now, but about living people.

Want to play a good Dark Urge who resists the Urge.
And an evil Gale who has Nice Guy/incelly vibes: I AM ENTITLED TO MYSTRA'S LOVE AND IF SHE WON'T LOVE ME I'LL USURP HER GODHOOD

Mystra is a Neutral God, so I'm not sure how using her to obtain godhood counts as 'evil'. It doesn't even seem like he wants to kill her, just prove that he is worthy of her. Misguided maybe, but not evil.

Well, a city guard can turn out to be a badass in disguise... and the game is not all about combat, right? Cunning can do as much as brute force in a lot of situations. So can knowledge! I would not personally delete the librarian from the equation...

DRAGON FIRE-AND DOOM Dragons? Splendid things, lad-so long as ye look upon them only in tapestries, or in the masks worn at revels, or from about three realms off... Astragarl Hornwood, Mage of Elembar - Year of the Tusk
