I kill the flame-wielding fucker in every single playthrough and never once I did it through stealth, frankly.
Yeah - I haven't used any of the tactics anyone mentioned here and I still kill him just fine.
That aside, I wouldn't be particularly mad if the item was removed entirely at release. I feel like its presence is kinda harmful to the weapon variety, in the beginning.
