before I choose it, I would really like to know if it causes any restrictions on your choices that a normal custom character wouldn't have.

Like, does the urge to kill lock you off from branching path decisions, romances, etc

I heard there were spoilers in the video explaining all the changes so I don't want to watch it to get these answers. I hope there aren't any, because I'd like to try the Dark Urge origin as a paladin, and if it forces you to murder people or act evil then it's an immediate non-starter.

Regardless of the answer, I think Larian wants you to play the game more than once.

From what I saw in the footage yesterday you can resist the dark temptation and I got that impression from what the devs said too. So whether or not it locks you in or out of certain paths is probably up to you, like choices for any other character.

I can't play a long game more than once in a year. Even though there's lots of branching paths, these kinds of games are still 90% the same in every playthrough so I get bored fast if I've already done something. This is why I haven't played BG3 since January; I know if I played it soon before release that I'd dread having to go through the nautiloid and find the druids again.

So after a ~100 hour game it's not likely I'm going to replay it just to see one more origin play out.

Dark Urge seems like “Tav +”. You get all of the options that Tav has and then add dark urges to those options.

Like using tadpole powers, giving in to those dark urges is likely to huge ramifications.

This is and interesting question. I don't think Larian will answer it so as not to spoil things but they did say that there will be a price to pay for embracing it the same as with the tadpole...there is the allure of great power for doing so but you might end up alone. So I suspect that the more you give in to the dark urge the more you lose control, but that's just a suspicion. Still if you plan to just fully resist it all the way and never give in then I don't think it will override any choice. Also of note as demonstrated in the gameplay showcase, the dark urge choices aren't always what they seem, like when Larian chose to "imagine" ripping that guy's hand off and then the player character really did it...a slippery slope for sure and could definitely derail some of your intended plans to go through the game.

What if it tempts you to kill your companions and you get some sort of power from it. Like you kill Gale and suddenly you get the Wizard Adept feat or something.

Stuff along those lines is all but confirmed.
They did say in the stream that you stand to gain much power by following the dark urge but that you may be left alone in the end. They also said that it will be a very different experience to reach the city of Baldur's gate very powerful but alone vs reaching it less powerful but with many friends and allies.

Oh, so it's their way of adding a solo playthrough that's balanced. Makes sense.
