The National Day is called Bastille Day because the prison of Bastille which was a symbol of the power of the king, was taken on the 14th of july.

This allso indicated the start ofthe French revolution. Uoi might have heard of it, it's quite famous .

I'm not sure, but I think we Belgians celebrate more on the 21 th of july? Maybe I don't know much about Belgian history, since I'm more interested in Flemmish history. That celebration was on the 11th of july.

Did no one read my post yesterday?? I thought I said something about the confusion here? @ Macbeth -> really? well i always think a country is always female, so it should be called a motherland, eh?

@ Al -> oh yeah! i agree, Barta should be the one to lead France as the prez.

I guess it has to do with the grammatical sex of a word as well. La Luna - the moon is female in some languages. Der Mond - here in German language the moon is male.

Same goes for other languages, too.

In the french language some countries are female and some countries are male.
I really don't know why.

Female countries : La France, La Belgique, La Malaysie, La Sude, la Norvge,......
Male countries : Le Portugal, Le Canada, Le Brsil, Le Japon, Le Togo,.....

Alrick
Just say "Vive Barta". No need to use "le" or "la" before the name of a person.

Only the great belgium singer, Jacques Brel could make this mistake when he said " La Mathilde est revenue".

Truly Barta 1 of the things I miss here in Australia is European Music, we mostly get music with english lyrics, and well lets just say "Jacques Brel" I haven't heard in ages, or Charles Aznavour for that matter, lol just remembered the only french single I still have is from the "poppies" although the title escapes me right now, it was the first group to come out with synthisized (sp?) music

et vous ma cher Barta " La vie en rose"

Wow, honestly, you are the first one from whom I hear this statement.

Here in Germany, we have a different problem : All musicb is English, rarely ever German-language music on the radion (in the recent years a bit more, hooray ), and everything seems to be Britain-based or American-based. Everything's English. We rarely hear Musich from other countries, don't know why the radion stations don't play it.

*sigh*
