I don't think that was the implication in that removed book. If anything it seemed like it had to do with Halsin's predecessor. There is the bit when rescuing Halsin where he says once he enters the bear form, there's only one course of action to follow....violence. Which seemed odd at the time for a Druid wildshape. I like the werebear theory, especially since we seem to be down on werewolf.
