A professor I once had gave a seminar on chaos theory, and had a picture of a butterfly on the opening transparency below the title. Despite it being a graduate studies level seminar, many people were confused about what the butterfly had to do with anything. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />

chaos theory = extreme dependence on initial conditions. A frequent example is that a butterfly flapping its wings can cause a storm on the other side of the world.
