Well, it is new to Baldur’sGate3 up to this point our choice has been completely undefined Tav, or completely defined Origin.

Dark Urge could have been Larian’s response to people wanting Tav to have more of a role or definition. In a way Dark Urge could be closer to what one would expect from traditional “blank” RPG protagonist.

I am generally less interested if a concept is new or original, and more if it’s well executed. We will see.

At this point I am leaning toward doing the first run as Tav, and if I get around to doing a 2nd run, it will most likely be Dark Urge. Goody two-shoes Palladin Dark Urge, potentially moving toward being a fallen Paladin.

I said it before, Dark Urge as one of several origins made this way would be cool - even if the game has you lose controll as its part of the special experience of dealing with something bigger than yourself. My problem though is the only other character you can customize is Tav - and that's all there is to them. No quest, no animation, no backdrop,... just a front row seat to watch how much more effort has gone into your 'companions'.

I would expect the usual origin to be what Niara described. In this case the Durge could be the exception from the rule. Sadly Durge seems to be the closest Larian is willing to go to an origin system that actually tries to accomodate the majority of the players (just look at the poll who players will pick as their starting character with still 70+% going with plain boring Tav, ~25% Durge... I know its just the first playthrough, but if you think that the majority of players will do a second AND be using origins I'm quite certain you are wrong, since engagement with games drops significantly after the first weeks in most games of this kind with very few actually bother to finish even one playthrough).

I'd suggest that discussion of the pros and cons of Durge vs Tav should go here, where debate on this topic is already taking place, and we keep this one for talking about what we think of Durge themself.

Cheers!
