Sounds like Bard to me.

Just out of curiosity, who said the he WAS paladin all along? laugh
It may come as surprise to you, but you can sworn an oath any time you want. wink

All that is said in Wylls story is that he made an pact with Devil ...
So does Gale if you refuse to feed him with items ... does Gale becime Warlock? No?
So does that Paladin and his friends on Risen Road ... does they all become Warlocks? No?
So why should Wyll?

Nah ...
Shafowheart only needs to worship Shar ...
There is no need for her to be Cleric. wink

Also we are talikng here about Class ... deity is completely different choice. wink
Either she is Cleric > and she worships Shar
Or ahe is not a Cleric > and she worships Shar

See? Easy, simple, effective, with scent of lemons.

I think we definitely should be able to change companions class AND race as well. From playing EA hundreds of hours I think for example Astarion would be better as half orc barbarian vampire. It would fit the story better. I see Shadowheart as Dragonborn warlock and Gale as halfling wizard.

Gale stealing magic prohibited items thinking he's doing something cool only to impress a girl is totally an halfing thing now that you make me notice it!

Wow Rag. I'm game for spirited disagreement but this poll really does seem like you're just insulting everyone who doesn't agree with you. It certainly does not seem like you're interested in having any kind of good faith debate. Or if you are then you don't realize that this is the absolute worst way to start one off.

Dunno about that. Astarion has a strong githyanki GOO warlock vibe and Shadowheart is definitely more of a duergar druid. Gale should clearly be gnome Ilmater cleric.

Can Halsin just be a bear. Not a half-elf who wildshapes into a bear. Can he just be a bear Druid? Is it too late to make that change?

Maybe he was a bear who civilshape into an half-elf all the time!

Oh dear. This is the second post I've looked at since waking up. I hope it's an outlier among last night's discussions.

I think I said only yesterday that insulting in the teasing, joshing way that can work amongst friends (which I'm charitably assuming is what Rag was going for) generally just comes across as rude online and should be avoided.

I would also suggest a new poll couched in more neutral language so we can actually see what people think without putting backs up. I'd be very interested in the results, as I admit just how much people object to respeccing has caught me by surprise. I've never given it much thought in games before, so getting the different perspectives here is, as always, interesting even when I don't ultimately change my mind.

No, you ignored the actual questions.

How would a devotion paladin Astarion work considering it was his job to lie? He also would not be able to lie in any of the cutscenes and dialogues (same would apply to devotion paladin Gale with his tales or devotion Shadowheart?)

For respeccing to work no origin companion would ever be allowed to use or reference any class ability in a cutscene or dialogue, in a game. No bear scene from Halsin because he might nit be a druid at that point, no display of magic from Gale at any point ect.

And the question about Shadowheart was not about respeccing her into another class (but that too can be problematic, see the devotion paladin) but resoeccing her into a cleric of a different deity.
Hard to worship shar if you are a cleric of Tyr.

For all this to even remotely work the story of those characters would need to be grinded down to the most generic, cookie cutter thing imaginable. Or Larian has to do extra work to make cutscenes for every eventuality. And both are simply not worth it.

Whenever I create a character and start allocating skills and proficiencies during the game, I tend to do so with the narrative in mind. So, a ranger might go rogue when learning about the ways of the city; something like that. Also, I would never multi into say, Sorc or Warlock - that to me, is a first-level choice *only*. It;s just how I play, the story matters more than my battle prowess.

In Classic Baldur's Gate I dabbled with the SCS options to respec companions, and I do so now more or less everytime; but I still stay within what the character *could* be, narratively. Kivan an Archer, Minsc a Berserker*, Kagain a Dwarven Defender, Mazzy a Paladin, Cernd a Shaman, Imoen a shadowdancer, Jan a single class Illusionist - that sort of thing. But even then, I use it sparingly. I play no-reload SCS exclusively, so it doesn't feel OP either.

Back to BG3.
If I have an Origin character, I would rarely if ever change the starting class and probably develop that class fully. I can see some cool multi-options for some characters; Minsc into Barbarian, Shadowheart into [any] Rogue, Wyll into - possiby Paladin. But that's purely because of RP reasons, not because they need it.

I just don't see Astarion as anything other than an assassin. Maybe a Dexy-fighter? I don't know, not in my game I think. Karlach ought to be exactly as she is. Gale is the quintessential Wizard and will stay that way. He could have different subclasses across multiple playthroughs, but will always be a full on wizard in my games. Laezel is fine as a fighter, who's left? Halsin couldn't be other than druid, Jaheira is story-locked as far as I'm concerned; but Druids suck at multiclassing in 5E. So we'll see. Do you get an extra attack from fighter when wildshaped? I don't even remember what class Minthara is..

For my first few playthroughs, I'll just stick to who they are - and get to see them in action that way before I start the crazy stuff.

Or the cutscenes just play out like normal and don’t acknowledge the narrative dissonance between the character’s intended class and their respecced class. That’s probably how it works.

I don't expect it to work any differently.

Answer honestly, do you really think that a regular 20th century gamer is even gonna pay that much mind to what is said in a dialogue? I think they just wanna see fireballs flying everywhere and some bear fucking.

Reactive AAA game...

A game is still a game and have limitated resources. I don't expect it to react at every single possible thing I'll do during my gameplay. It's like in witcher 3 when you save a poor family from starving, then you loot their houses while rigorously rolling around, then they thanks you.

I don't think so. The average gamer will be confused for a minute then will realize "Oh, right, I respecced, lol!"

We all know you’re upset by this, but you’re not convincing anybody who doesn’t already care to care. Frankly, you’re just coming off as weirdly bitter against a video game.

I honestly have no idea what people want out of popular media and I don’t really try very hard to figure that out. 😂

Five minutes after this game comes out there will be mods on Nexus to turn it into LotR and five minutes after that to turn it into GoT. People will play the game how they want.

Cute....
If you pay attention to Larians marketing you will realize that reactivity is one of the big selling points of BG3. Which means simply ignoring the abilities, or rather the lack of them, from origin characters is a double black mark against the game as not only it is pretty unimmersive, it also goes against what BG3 is supposed to be.

To make it work, Larian either has to spend a huge amount of effort to account for possible respecs, effort that cant be spend elsewhere, or turn down the story so much to be generic in a story driven game.

Considering that there is hardly any point in being able to do a full respec all of those options are bad. The best and also simplest solution is not have level 1 respecs.
