I believe his exact words are "there is gust of weave around you, what i need is a tempest" ...
And im not sure here, but i feel like its exactly same response as for Wizards.

Anyway that is his responce to your snark ...
You can hardly take game responcible for you laughing to Gale that you are better than Wizard. smile

Also as far as i know, Withers provide respec ...
And it seems safe to asume you wouldnt be able to respec your party members... at least until they become your party members. smile
So ... i wouldnt expect this to cause problems.
If you play as a sorcerer there is a whole lot of unique dialogue with Gale which makes no sense if Gale was a sorcerer (or indeed not a wizard). So that either needs to be cut or the game makes no sense. And that is just one small example from what is a very, very large game. And the point is they need to test all this cutting and re-writing in addition to actually doing it. At a time when they are releasing the game a month early.
Personally I would much prefer that they do not allow companions to have less than 1 level of their default class and not have to deal with all the issues this creates. Someone will then doubtless create a mod that enables you to play Gale the Barbarian and that is all fine because mods are allowed to break the game.
