I found the breath weapon pretty handy on Dragonborn in Solasta, particularly against enemies who are just out of reach. but it was buffed slightly relative to the PHB version, as I assume the BG3 version will be. In the tabletop game there tends to be more hand-waving over positioning, so "just out of melee range" crops up less often.

NB, given the choice, always select line over cone.
