Since this is a bit of negative critique let me first say that I love the game so far, and it seems there has been no or little compromize towards making BG3 a game that the devs can be very proud of.

However, there has been some critique of the combat system so far, one issue being that it was possible for a low level monster or character to instant kill someone with loads of hit points simple by pushing them from great height or into water or lava. I once played pen and paper ADnD with some guys who used to fondly think of the times when they constantly got up at night and slit the throat of party members just for the fun of it. That kind of game play may be fun for some yes, but it completely ruins the game for others. Think of all the hours you spent building up your character so that he could be a great hero. No shame in being killed by a mighty dragon, but if any low level goblin who comes along can just push you off some edge and that's it then it stops being fun. No need for a complex levelling system then.

So it annoys me when simple goblins are equipped with high damage area effecting arrows. Or when how you do in the next fight depends on what you have picked up in terms of one time use items. 'Yeah, I found this bomb in a random stash, threw it at the enemy, and boom the fight was over.' Is that really the story you want to tell your grand children? 'I spent years practicing my sword fighting skills, but in the end it really didn't matter.'

So yeah, instant kill can be fun, but it is out-of-context fun and I think many of us just find it to be stupid.

This was one of my very few complaints about what is otherwise (so far) a very great game.

Personaly i have no problem with lowly goblin shoving me over the edge ... i shouldnt have stand on the edge, that is entirely on me.
What enrages me tho, is when my great hero... is shoved by lowly Goblin over the edge that is 5-10 metters away!

Like, if i would want to get there, it would cost me half of my movement, and you want to tell me that this ... thing that wouldnt be able to even hold my armor for its weight ... "shoved" me there? -_-
Come on.

I still dont understand why cant we change Race for our hirelings. frown
Lets us play Githyanki as racist as they trully are! frown

Barrelmancy does make for some really capturing tales of heroism.

So there I was. All my many years of training in the kung fu style of the open hand had lead me to this moment. I knew I was going to need every skill, every talent, every scrape of experience I had ever picked up to survive this fight. So I pulled a barrel of nastiness from my inventory, placed it on the ground, and ran for all I was worth, as my friend, Robby the Rogue, shot a fire arrow at it. BOOOOOOOM!! And that, as they say, was that.

That said, shoves generally are quite fun, IMO, but shove distance is really weird, and particularly horizontal shove distance as you descend gets increasingly suspect.

I was playing with Gale in party on my recent playthrough, I was I thought, quite far from edge of lava in Duergar area - killed Nere, and was mopping up others when this archer fired an arrow that knocked poor Gale back a *huge* distance, into lava and *whoosh* ...dead. First time ever. Then I couldn't get him out of the lava.... all because of something that's not actually in the D&D :o
I then experienced the not-so-fun 'riddle to raise gale' so I reloaded and redid the fight...but there is no way he should have been knocked that far back. I specifically (having being pushed off things before) positioned everyone away from edges. What have they not fixed this yet? Will it ever be fixed? It just so OTT

PS I don't mind shove (as an *action*) where someone can move me perhaps 5 feet - but the huge distances are just comical ( bad comedy).

Conversely, I killed a harpy by pushing it off a ledge. Yeah, that didn't seem right either.

Even 5 feet is too far. Shove should give a chance of knocking your opponent prone, and if they are right next to a drop a chance of knocking them off if they would have been knocked prone. (And maybe if the knocking prone is failed you should have a chance of triggering disengage.)

Explosive barrels should just be removed from the game, or be rather rare in fixed positions and can't be picked up or moved.
