I believe it's for ease of play. Creating a hireling is an involved and time consuming business. See PF: WotR for example. This is more casual-friendly.

I'm sure these hirelings come with a free respec so you can make them into anything you want if that is your preference.

The only thing you might not be able to customise is their race. And even that might be possible. Ability scores and class can certainly be changed to anything you want. Or you can use them off the peg. Because some people just want a hireling of the desired class without having to build them from scratch.

Deliberatley? No.
But its a descision that i dont understand.
And it falls under the "you dont care" thing.
Yeah YOU dont. But i might. I know plenty of people that do. Making your own party is part of the DnD fantasy for quite a few people.

The hirelings as they are, feel pointless. Like padding that dont scratch the itch people want scratched. Whats so hard to just add to the list of hirelings that already exist a "custom" option.
Solves all problems, cannot be hard to do.

There was a conscious descision made to make the hirelings this way and i for the life of me cannot figure out what was the thought process behind it. Just seems weird.

Especialy with *those* hirelings.
None of them are classic combinations, and they got stuff thats, quite frankly and maybe ill get warned for this, offputting.
Weird pronouns arenot everyones business. It personally brings me out of it. Im not a native speaker and reading the paragraph about the weird orc paladin was annoying to me.

Because there is no point, since they can be respeced, just like every other character in the game.

Exactly. i cannot customize either the race or the name, nor the sex for that matter.

Read: if i want to create my IRL DnD party in Baldurs Gate 3, i cannot do that without an annoying exploit.

You are not engaging in good faith.
If a cahracter is just a statblock, you might aswell play Low Magic Age or Solasta.

But for a game that prides itself in character choice, reactivity and the world acknowledigng what character you made, yeah, customizing the looks, race and sex of a character *is* a big deal.

Pretty sure you are jumping to conclusions there. You are staring from the perspective of "Larian want to make it bad". Try starting from "Larian want to make it good", because that is the only rational assumption to make - they want to make a profit, and they will make a bigger profit by making it good.

You have incomplete data, and you are filling the blanks with [DOOM].

Oh it only now occurs to me the Orc has weird pronouns. I agree that it makes it utterly confusing, and frankly a little overdoing it. I hope this doesn't come up too much in the game, but all of a sudden they're rather big on showing these things so that *is* worrying. To each his own, but I like to get lost in a fantasy setting. And with that, not be taken out of it and reminded of a modern day culture war that I just really don't want to partake in.

In short. This is not for me either; though when just taking this guy - I doubt that will come up at all once you hire him. I wouldn't use hirelings outside of combat at all, so not much a problem, and they probably won't be pronouning all of them. One is actually called Sir, complete with an epic beard and all.

The only thing I'm genuinely missing here though, is a solid bearded dwarf with a good illegal 22 con.

youre still not engaging with what i said.
i come from the conclusion that larian made a choice, wether good or bad.
i said i disagree with the choice for these reasons.

Meanwhile youre not engaging, but rather saying i come form a faulty viewpoint.
No matter WHY larian chose to make Hirelings this way, my reasons for disliking it dont change.

Is it time again for my spiel about it being okay to agree to disagree and stop when you have made your opinion clear?

I'm going to have to bind it to a shortcut key at this rate, while we're all antsy getting partial information and desperately waiting for the game grin

Another dissappintment. *sigh* I knew this would happen. It seems from the description it is set up like the earlier DOS games. Now, if you can change everything about them that is manageable. Really would like a full dwarf party. Is that too much to ask?

Wow, you said it so much more polite and better than I ever could have.

What you said is so true and at the same time so sad.

Fact ...so many peeps wanted the ability to create a custom party from the start, and it was heavily voiced over the years of early access.

Yet Larian decided putting time and money into some Bear Sex, outweighed what the community wanted....

And peeps still come here and try to justify crappy decisions made by this company...Especially when programming the ability to create a custom party would be beyond simple, and would have made tons of peeps happy.

Instead we are Pigeon holed into their ways of thinking on what is going to be fun for us in game.

Go Figure.

@The Red Queen. I did not use the term "Bootlicker"

Hopefully all sins are forgiven. ;/

What I'm getting from this is that Hirelings are just 12 more dead bodies, unlike Companions, I don't have to worry about setting them on fire or hurting them, because I won't have to feel bad about them, when I do it,

"Come on hirelings, I throwing one of you at bad guy 1 who is stuck in the grease area, then on my next turn, I'll just toss fire ball without worrying about collateral damage, it's not like you guys will turn on me or anything since I'm paying you to die for me."

I'm willing to withhold judgment until I see how the system works on release, but again I will reiterate: I do not want to use pre-made hirelings. Keep the option there for those that want to grab and go, sure. This is something PoE2 has at the tavern when you hire mercenaries. But also give me the option to create characters from scratch.

If the hirelings as they are now can be entirely redone, and their little backstory blurbs won't come up in gameplay, then cool. I can just choose the starting class and wipe it clean and no harm or foul. But when I do my playthroughs of full customs, I do not want to have these pre-made stories for MY creations, nor do I want to have to stick to race and class combos that do not fit with the characters I want to make. Throw in a blank face under the other 12 faces for a "clean slate" choice if that's what it takes. Everyone is now happy.

I'd also rather not use that multiplayer workaround if it does flag everyone as a Tav. And I can't imagine that being fun with the mod I'll be using for larger party sizes, so 5 or 6 instances of the game running? No, thank you.

Again. I'll wait to see how it all works on release. But right now I am, unfortunately, not exactly feeling optimistic. This was a huge draw for me, too, so I'm particularly antsy about it.

Both Pillars and Pathfinder work like that, just keep those 12 premade hirelings and add one last ''custom'' option where you fully customize the character (including bio if you want), I don't see why that could be a problem. And of course don't make the custom option a 1 time thing, if someone wants 3 custom so be it.

Also something I don't understand is they have put great emphasis in calling hirelings ''temporary'' companions.
