Again. If they mention him... Fanfiction. You are playing through a fanfiction with a budget and nothing is wrong with that.

We are not playing through our timelines, we are playing through Abdel's and that's how we should treat it.

Okay, we try to discourage debates getting overheated here. I don't think this actually qualifies as I'm not aware of anyone who actually likes Abdel and is therefore likely to defend him, but I am slightly worried you're going to burst something grin

That said, I won't be surprised or even upset if BG3 doesn't respect all the possible ways our BG1&2 playthroughs went. After all, BG2 didn't respect BG1, and we already know Jaheira and Minsc are in BG3 no matter what happened to them in our earlier games. It's okay, I can adapt. But I would still strongly prefer that BG3 avoids imposing too much as canon from the earlier games, at least insofar as that's compatible with making sure there are still satisfying connections. And I also really don't want to see Abdel mentioned by name.

I would however be cool with Edwin turning out to be Lorroakan. That would be fun, even though I rarely had him in my party in BG1 and don't think I ever have in BG2. I am worried for Rolan, though ...

Certainly we'll find a mod that changes "Tav" to "Abdel" and prevents anyone from changing names wink

Seriously though... the less he gets mentioned in-game, the better. I don't think it can be avoided entirely as he has become canon or am I mistaken there?

WotC have a flexible (and from discussions here, sometimes controversial!) approach to canon. There's not one set canon that all FR media need to follow, and just because one licensed source does include Abdel, that doesn't necessarily mean others also have to or even necessarily have to be consistent. I think they see each D&D game/book/etc as a kind of possible world that might have various things in common with other games set in the FR, but exactly how much is mainly left up to DMs and players to determine. So in this case, I imagine Larian would have had a fair amount of leeway in how far they took things like Murder in Baldur's Gate as part of their own story. My guess is that they might have taken some elements and probably haven't done anything that completely and obviously contradicts it, but that they've left enough open that a wide variety of BG1&2 playthroughs would still be consistent with what we learn in BG3. At least, that's my hope!

BTW The FR wiki has some useful stuff on the approach to canon here.

My "canon" Gorion's Ward romanced Xan, and I fully intend to create their daughter as one of my Tavs. The game is in no way going to acknowledge these things - obviously - but I have grown very good at self-delusion and rewriting scenes in my head as they play out! biggrin

Xan is one of my faves too, though insofar as I have a canon Gorion's Ward (which I don't really, it was just a reasonably recent playthrough that grabbed my imagination somehow), she had a rather unhealthy relationship with Dorn for whom she replaced his rejected patron, especially when she ascended to the Throne of Murder. I'm guessing that the "ascend" endings might end up not represented in BG3 given it looks like Bhaal is definitely back, though we'll see. I'll cope if it turns out BG3 is set in an alternative universe to her story.

But like you, I'm willing to ignore and twist bits of what I see in the game to preserve my head-canon if that's what I need to do, though I do have my limits when it's more than the odd throwaway line!

Take everything from Minsc and Boo's journal of Villainy with a grain of salt, it's not official DnD source material.

Yeah, Xan is a favorite of mine too. I used him or Dynaheir as my spellcasters.
