I've got nearly 200 posts and comments just in this general thread to catch up with, so if this is apropos of any other discussions, apologies. Thinking about folks who have zero interest in Durge on account of their awfulness, I'm wondering how close that is to Lady M in The Scottish Play. They're both awful, and Lady M certainly has regret where what we've seen of Durge that's not present, but ruling it out is entirely speculation. If anybody wouldn't want to play Lady M on account of what she does and subsequently regrets, I'd be fascinated to hear the reasons. What other operators in literature and stage and film are awful awful awful? I think also Catherine in East of Eden, Steinbeck goes out of his way to tell us that she's not like Lady M, that there's no good in her and she has no regrets. I've never seen East of Eden staged or filmed, but I reckon anybody wouldn't want to play that role regardless of the actions of the character. And is that these characters are transcendent cultural/literature-wise relevant or not to one's interest in playing awful characters?
