Couldn't really be sure unless you tried them all I can't try them all. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" /> I use PC-Cillin since 3 years. I did not have any problem with it but i would like to try a new one. And maybe i could use also a second free program. Like Mea, I am paranoid.

Stay away from Norton and McAfee imo.

I've used AVGFree for at least 5 years now , and... should I chance to say, I've never had a problem it couldn't fix, yet,...! I give it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> cuz it's free,... and it works!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/stupid.gif" alt="" />

Only other thing I know is: Stay away from Comodo I tried it at work and it played havoc with resources AND networking ... it just disabled things without asking or conformation took me near on 2 weeks to get every thing back to normal without comodo which I guess is a Dragon in disguise <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

Like Jurak, I've used AVG free for several years now... but I can't honestly say it's the "best", because I've never had a problem for it to deal with. I tend to be ultra cautious in my computer use (when I'm not playing games <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> ). Definitely low risk insofar as internet use goes... but do, being paranoid like all sensible folk, maintain the usual arsenal of firewall, anti-virus software, and various other clean-up utilities.
My lineup right now consists of AVG Free (with email plug-in disabled), Comodo firewall (on a standalone system with a very simple configuration, which may be why I've had better luck with it than Mea!), plus periodic use of Spybot S&D, Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, and CCleaner.

I've decided to try out AVG again after these discussions. I removed McAfee and think I'll stay with AVG for now.
One benefit is far less system resources being used for AVG. I boot up now with nearly 50MB more ram than before.
I did stop using lavasoft adware because it kept telling me I was clean, where spybot, and AVG anti-spy always found the odd thing.

hmm the thing is that spybot uses dummy plugs to fool the system, and sometimes this can confuse ad-aware:)

I voted McAfee and Spybot S&D. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I haven't tried AVG enough to be able to vote for it. I know someone who has it, and they haven't had too many detections... but that doesn't me there aren't more. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" /> Maybe when my McAfee runs out, I'll give AVG a whirl. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> Until then, same praise that you guys mentioned already for McAfee. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> Killerzzz

Which is the best free antivirus? an informed proactive human being or You could invest money in a potatoe farm and use the profits to buy a brand name anti virus like Norton, but then realize that having an anti virus that everyone knows about may not be such a good idea after all. Having this insight <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/idea.gif" alt="" /> you decide to get a non brand name anti virus, which happens to not have such a broad support base as a brand name anti virus. Scratching your chin you decide to venture and procure an illegal copy of symantec antivirus etc <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif" alt="" /> . You lose your mind after fighting yourself over the moral debate of your computer and what you have done. Surely you are worth more then a $50 anti virus, your organs, your gift of life from god or your superiority of swimming upriver <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" /> to be alive. Ashamed and fraught with fear, you leave your computer to its demise while you hide in some hole in the ground with nothing but a potatoe to keep you company. Meanwhile as your national government looks for you, your crime plunging your nation in debt $50, you instantly realize that potatoe pancakes taste very very good. As your sitting in your hold with your thoughts of potatoe recipes, your young niece or cousin whatever decides to stop by your potatoe shack and use your computer while your gone. What originally was a hello im going to eat all your food and drink your wine then say good bye turned into a family visit gone wrong. Your niece or some such decided to venture to some porn sites and then topped it off with some warez sites, they were no doubt french websites like "viva la potatoe.com" By the time you understood that no one was really looking for you, you head back to your potatoe farm. Your cousin was long gone by the time you got back but your computer was destroyed. In resignation of your computer that blew up <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" /> , you stand among your potatoe farm, pitch fork proudly in your hand. As you stare up at the heavens you have this wondrous idea to make french fries out of your potatoes, and thus you set off to make your fortune computer less.

Under Advanced there's is a setting that will take care of that, also if you have the CookieCuller for FF you can protect the cookie <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
