Wild Companion (Optional)
At 2nd level, you gain the ability to summon a spirit that assumes an animal form: as an action, you can expend a use of your Wild Shape feature to cast the Find Familiar spell, without material components.

When you cast the spell in this way, the familiar is a fey instead of a beast, and the familiar disappears after a number of hours equal to half your druid level.

Play Spore Druid. They convert uses of Wildshape into their cool spore powers, allowing you to play them without turning into animals like other druids do. The option is still there for utility, but mostly you'll be sacrificing the power to fuel your subclass abilities.

We know what you are asking for. But it's very unlikely there are going to be any last minute addition of the vast array of optional rules recently added to the game in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.

The good news is that in BG3 a single level dip into ranger can give you an ability that is a more powerful version of the same thing. Also, the Nature Domain Cleric is pretty much a druid with no wildshape.

I honestly dont know in what book this was written.

I also noticed release is close ... even tho i brought this rule up furst time back in days when Druid was introduced.

And lets be honest ... this particular addition us basicaly Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V ... with resource change.

As for Cleric ... or diping to Ranger ...
I bet you know what i would say. wink

If you read the description, Wild Companion is actually pretty lame:

It was not. Your post only said you weren't interested in playing a Wildshaping druid, so I thought I'd be helpful and let you know there's a subclass that does that for you.

I'm not gonna say no to an optional companion. I play with this rule even as a Moon Druid because I like having the option.

Though given how powerful Wildshape is even for a Land Druid using it to get one of the extremely weak companions isn't exactly an equal trade. I hope familiars in general are way better on full release. At the very least someone seeing a raven shouldn't give away my party's position and aggro an entire camp.

As per PnP rules, familiars don't scale, so they become an increasing liability as you increase in level.

Since i wrote it in OP ... it seems fair to presume i have read it aswell. laugh

Familiars are weaker in BG-3 than pnp, that much is true ...
But i wouldnt call them lame. O_o

In the end tho, its just option ... if you dont want to call familiar this way, its nothin easier than not doing that. laugh
