Just Zhalk and the Mind Flayer (who was nearly dead anyways by the time Zhalk fell). After getting the greatsword, I just did the transponder to keep going. Didn't think it was worth it to risk fighting the 2 extras. What I did: I split the party into 2 groups with me, Shadowheart, and Lae'zal in group A, and the "Us" in group B. I left "Us" in the room with the restoration pod/thingy in hopes of using it during combat to heal my party, which worked fine. I ended up using it twice total. However, I didn't realize the 2 extra cambians would run into that room and create a second encounter with Us, which basically froze the 2 extra cambians and Us in battle and prevented them from entering the main helm room. I just figured they'd kill Us and continue into room, but Us acted as a blocker to keep them out, which allowed me to (not easily, but not difficult) kill Zhelt. There were lots of misses, average hit was like 30-40%, except with a handful of 65% when they were stunned or I was hidden, etc. Took a while, but when Zhelt fell, the Mind Flayer only had about 13 hp, which I finished him with a couple hits.
And, no. I'm not a troll. I just didn't read the tutorials, so I didn't even know about stuff like how to rotate views and left-alt to see what I can interact with, etc. Also, I didn't use "recommended" stats for Ranger, I just created a better (imho) stat'd ranger than the defaults and understood better where the battle indicators (like disadvantage, etc.) were located at. I didn't even remember seeing the text at top of screen in my first ship play through. I also got lucky with the above spoiler technique that I didn't even know would work that way - worked better than I had intended, plus I knew where I could walk to before the 2nd group (near controls) would enter battle, so I was able to avoid them until I was ready for them. I also felt like I had better gear this time as well, since I could see who I could loot (left-alt), so I looted more corpses and had more throwables as well. It's not a spoiler, this stuff will likely be fixed in the full release. If you really want to exploit the ship see below. 1. You don't need to use the restoration pad near the entrance to the control room, you can use any restoration pad in the entire ship. 2. Stack all the explosives (the purple containers you find in the ship) near where the 2 extra cambions come in at the choke point. When they get close blow them both up - keep a blocker down there to make sure they stop at the right part. (The cambions have 400 gold on them and scale armor) 3. make sure you kill the mindflayer yourself so you get the 75 XP for that. 4. There is a second mindflayer you can kill in the room off to the side from the helm - that woman that gets turned into one when you press the button. if you toss one of those acid filled sacks at the base of the pod it will slowly die from that and you get 75 xp to the party for the kill. (someone has to be present in the room for the kill) There now you are an expert.

I don’t bother with the Nautilloid. Skip Us. Skip Shart. Skip cutscenes. One shot all the imps and boars because low HP. Run to the transponder. Start the Actual Game.

On the Nataloid:
Surge forward killing the minions and dog pile the devil.
When his health is low, send one character forward to trigger the next group. As long as their are enemies the mind flayer will not attack you.
Finish Zariel and the mind flayer will move to attack the imps. He will do so until the last two devils arrive.
Use Shadow Heart's Guiding Bolt spell (x2) on one of the devils and focus fire on that devil first, and then the next.
If the mind Flayer survives he will be quite weak (avoid his mind blast by splitting up).
Hope this helps.

I've moved this thread from Suggestions & Feedback to the Help, Tips & Tricks section where it was correctly pointed out to me that it better fits.

518 hours I’ve never once killed the cambions on the ship - didn’t see the point ..lol Glad you got it sorted - sounds like you have the d&d knowledge the rest is just learning the controls and some of the differences between tabletop and video game versions …but it’s so worth it this game is epic !

I tried it the other day. I was surprised by how easy it was to kill the first cambion and steel his sword without resorting to cheesy tactics. But I guess I had Shadowheart and the encounter was balanced for two PCs only. Pretty sure it will be changed in the live game. In multiplayer this encounter would be way too easy.

Just to end this thread, there's a bunch of stuff that I knew IRL, but I didn't know in BG3. I still don't know why my hit% was so low, but after playing for a few hours, I now understand combat. Not being a keyboard/mouse/PC gamer didn't help me much either. I didn't know I could rotate the camera until more than an hour into the game, which made combat and exploring more difficult for me as well. Bad, old age, eyesight regarding reading tiny text on screen didn't help me either--but at least I know where to look now and that I must wear my reading glasses when playing.
It's a lot different than I play D&D IRL, where for the last 30 years, we've always focused on role over rolls. This is more like what an AI DM would be like with RAW and using every known rule, which to be honest, knowing the rules and knowing the rules are different. With tabletop/friends, the GM can help/remind and guide the encounters to make the players feel like heroes/challenge without punishing them for forgetting or thinking they did something. I know (most of) D&D rules, but that doesn't mean I remember all of them at the correct times. I have often relied heavily on the DM (or players when I was DM) for some rules, since we've always focused on story/characters and used rules as guiderails to the story.
I still feel my first character I created is cursed, since even knowing how to play now, I can load that character and then fail multiple DC 10 checks (with advantage and with boosts from cleric spells and inspiration) in a row. So I just retired that character. Maybe there's hidden feats, unlucky or cursed, assigned to that character or something.
At first, I kept thinking that if I didn't see the dice pop up then I wasn't getting disadvantage (I was waiting to see 2 die and the rolls). And I never noticed the tiny text in the top/center of screen that lists the status/disadvantage/advantage until hours later. Also, I'm pretty sure everyone had darkvision, but I feel I didn't understand the shadows/light effects for combat either. And lastly, killing Commander Zhalt was pure accident/mistake when I left Us by the restoration pod, hoping to give me some free heals during combat, but Us ended up blocking the other 2 soldiers from entering.
I still plan on playing on Story/Explorer mode, but I still wanted to understand what I was doing, even if I were getting the Easy mode bonus.
Thanks to everyone who tried to help me. I was just very confused.

Wait… you beat Zhalk, the extra cambions, and the Mind Flayer instead of just running to the transponder??? It is not that difficult ... No but it is time-consuming, and that sword is barely worth it. I think the biggest payoff is the xp. There's a lot to be had on that room

Did you check your karmic dice settings or not? The suggestion popped earlier in that thread but I can't find your response.

That was the first setting that I disabled before I began my first play through. Then I give you general advice: use ranged attacks and then take cover; use throwable items like caustic bulbs and alchemist fire for guaranteed damage; use spells that do not rely on attack rolls for damage like burning hands, thunderwave, arms of hadar, shatter; use shields; focus one enemy at a time; prioritize enemies based on turn order; use consumables aggressively, don't keep to them, haste potion can win shitty fights.

I haven't check recently, but the extra two Cambions didn't use to give XP, so it was a complete waste of time.
The change that made the fight more annoying is having to grab everything with my Tav now, since SH and Laez are only temp characters. I'm running all around the room/tables picking everything up while taking potshots at the devil.
Back from timeout.
