This is definitely a suggestion that I've seen on the forum before and I agree that it would be great to more easily play the game with a sort of pseudo-over-the-shoulder view. I do try this sometimes, and it gives me a new appreciation for the detail in the world Larian have created.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look as though this is a feature we're getting for release.
You might already be aware, though it took me quite some time to realise, but in EA you can approximate it by clicking and holding the left mouse button to have your lead character constantly move towards the cursor. I find remapping some of the camera control helps as well. It's far from ideal as the click and hold is not very responsive and the fact left mouse click is also used to interact with the world interferes. Plus if you want to recentre the camera on your character you have to stop moving and double-click their portrait (I'd love it if Home did the same thing, but while it recentres the camera it also reorients and rezooms which is annoying). But still, better than nothing.
Exactly how I played DOS2. Click and hold all the way.
