Paying money to expunge sin isn’t American. That’s some olde worlde Catholicism. In American Protestantism all you need to do is ask forgiveness and you’re good.

You can get away with any sin with enough money, plus a lot of pay-for religious practices, and its probably have roots in the medival europe too, so kind of the same thing in spirit.
