Did you check your karmic dice settings or not? The suggestion popped earlier in that thread but I can't find your response.
Yes. That was the first setting that I disabled before I began my first play through.
Then I give you general advice: use ranged attacks and then take cover; use throwable items like caustic bulbs and alchemist fire for guaranteed damage; use spells that do not rely on attack rolls for damage like burning hands, thunderwave, arms of hadar, shatter; use shields; focus one enemy at a time; prioritize enemies based on turn order; use consumables aggressively, don't keep to them, haste potion can win shitty fights.
