Strength overall is dump stat in 5e.
In 3e/3.5/PF1e you at least had to work toward were dexterity been able give both to hit and damage bonus to melee. In 5e finesse weapons are no-brainer pick. And game right away lets you utilize dex for both to hit and damage bonus.
Plus, despite 5e kinda trying to bring concept that all stats now have saving throws, they did very little to actually support it. 90% of spells (and other effects) still have either dexterity, constitution or wisdom saving throw (older reflex, fortitude and will saves). And only very few have strength, intelligence or charisma save.
And of course, on top of that plainly armor class, especially since 5e again doing very poor job on trying limiting how much you get benefit from dexterity in that way.

Intelligence at least also gives you more skills, more languages, and key stat for Wizards. Charisma key stat for sorcerers and bards and needed for any dialogs.

Strength... if only for athletics... but even then, where there athletics option, there almost always alternative with acrobatics as well. So in the end strength really good only for carrying capacity (barely a problem, since player control all characters, and can easily move items in between inventories, even less problem later in the game with bag of holdings). And jump distance, which again can be overcome with many spells and abilities.
