NWN modules are pretty safe, they are essentially fanmade expansions/DLCs. The actual mods in the classic sense are the .hak files, that contain new models, textures, 2da files, etc.
If you're still interested in NWN, there are several incredibly well-made modules for it.

It took me years to finally install a mod for NWN 2, but I'm glad I did. There were some excellent adventure mods that were made for that game.

I've also relied on mods for Troika's Temple of Elemental Evil game, but I think most folks would argue that those were absolutely needed to play the game.

I probably won't install a mod for BG3 until I've exhausted as many playthroughs as I can.
