I dont see AI-controlled companions as anything but a complete disaster. They would inevitably (and I suspect not infrequently) do something completely the opposite of what they should do. Picking their spells etc on level‐up? How could one plan synergies between abilities if you can't be sure the relevant abilities would be used synergistically?
This is why it would be optional, so those that take issue with the possibility of a party becoming chaotic don't have to deal with it, while those like me that aren't bothered can enjoy it. I personally never had issue with the mod in Divinity. Party AI performed like enemy AI. They fought and buffed and used what was available for them and avoided using things that would turn odds against them. It played fairly smoothly on my end.
