Kudos for remembering that Viekang should have survived ToB though, I was positively surprised that he was the one who attacked.

But Imoen is also alive and still young.
Why was Abdel recognized as a Bhaalspawn and Imoen not?

If Imoen was with CHARNAME at the throne, she loses her taint, if I recall correctly.
Also, there is no knowledge about Imoen, since Minsc journal is not canon and never should be.
And I know of no other source that talks about her.

I think Abdel never really gave up his taint and Bhaals influence was just sealed at the finale of ToB. If you do the quests, Viekang is alive and has some taint.
I theorize that Imoens taint was removed by the Solar (or she died eventually). So, when Bhaals influence returned, there where only two Bhaalspawn left, Abdel and Viekang. Since Abdel is an experienced veteran who overcame his influence before, he focused on Viekang who was more of a coward.

Bhaal instilled a murderous rage into Viekang and pushed him towards Baldurs Gate. There Viekang attacked Abdel and died. Since there was no Solar to block the taint this time, Bhaals essence was once again united and he overcame Abdel Adrian mental resistance - reforming himself fully.

That is basically my personal head-canon that bridges BG2 ToB and Murder in Baldurs Gate.

Also, when Dark Urge was announced I wondererd if that *is* CHARNAME, or rather what is left of them after Bhaal emerged and reformed. Only kept around for Bhaals amusement and as a revenge for blocking the taint for so long. ^^
