There's also a lot of mandatory dialogue in the game right now, and we want the charismatic character to trigger the dialogue, but it's actually the character at the front that triggers the dialogue
This is neither gameplay (we want ability checks to be triggered by characters with high stats) nor realistic (your teammates don't just stand around doing nothing while you're talking).
There are several solutions
1、Can be switched to a teammate during a conversation (can be set to only switch at the beginning of a conversation)
2、Let the person in the conversation enjoy their teammate's abilities,That way you don't have to change the cutscene
Of course, the above methods can be limited to some scenarios

If tave runs headfirst t into an npc it doesn't make much sense for Wyll 30 feet away to lead the conversation.

why is because multiplayer + choice = dev time... they ran out, its that simple
1 doesn't work in multiplayer
2 sort of already is a thing but they just say what they want and the talker can agree or not
3 in BG1 & BG2 the dev team gave you a party leader that did all the talking checks and that system worked well but Larian didn't pick that option for whatever reason
