Swen didn't mention WotC, so I'm inclined to believe (!) they don't care. But we'll see.

WotC was brought up as the owner of the IP, hence potentially a player.
I have no idea how much "hands off" WotC is. Could be 100% up to Steam for all I know.

Well, my original post kinda misunderstood you, as in I kinda misunderstood "venting", so I will write again!

Since it seems that we need to re-download it and it drops at 19:00 I personally hope the download will be finished soon.
I myself go, like you apparently, to bed at 21:00 and unfortunately I have work the next day - I was basically forced to take my vacation this and last week.
So If I am very unlucky I have barely any time to play on Friday. And Saturday is probably a day I have to be away. So I do kinda feel your need to vent,
I just personally think it is better not to think too much about it, because otherwise it gets annoying.

And I mean, we have waited for this game for 20 years since ToB - or at least 3 years since start of EA. We can survive those delays as well! x_x

Fun fact: when I looked up Honor among Thieves, I found out that it released here a day earlier than beyond the pond. Which I found amusing.. laugh

Daher, es ist ärgerlich das wir was mehr warten müssen, aber wir schaffen das schon irgendwie! >_<

I feel with you. And I get my initial post has come off WAY harsher then it should have been, but I own my mistakes and such I'll not edit it. Whoever wants to read my character development arc has to read this while thread wink

Und ja, das ist extrem ärgerlich, aber ich hab mittlerweile Urlaub bis einschließlich 08.08.
Und ja, für SO ein Spiel nehme ich auch Urlaub xD

Anyone has any experience with Steam and VPN? I know I used this gimmick when DA Inquisition launched a day ahead someplace on earth and Origin was 'fooled' by VPN back then.

That might work with a midnight "your timezone" release, but not in this case.
As no way what timezone you appear to be in, it won't be 10am PST before it actually is.

Mark my words: IT WILL BE A CHAOTIC LAUNCH DAY

At least a million people downloading 150gb. Starting all at the same time!
If Larian doesn't do anything to mitigate this, they will get the blame.
I know it should be Steam's fault, but I'm damn sure Larian will be the one to bear the consequences.

Going to be so much unnecessary stress for everyone. Midnight release would split up the server access much better, which would be very beneficial for such a huge game.
Of course that would mean technically 24 individual releases even though automated.
And I bet that's why Steam doesn't want it. They'd have to pay 3 shifts of teams to watch everything instead of 1.

And that's why Larian should take a position against Steam.

Wouldnt it be exactly the same as when the very same millions of people were downloading 60GB patch ... i think it was 4 ... also starting all at exactly same time? laugh

Also, i believe it was stated by Swen that the game itself will only be around 80-90GB size ... the rest is just space that it will require for itself on disc to work properly.

Dont get me wrong, i see it may be problematic ...
I just feel you are painting it a little too dark. wink

Honest thanks for painting it a bit brighter. 90GB is way better an outlook, but I think we should prepare for at least 120GB. Better err on the side of caution here.

Problem is, Steams servers, despite the money that company must have, are at times very sub par laugh

Does Steam even have servers?
Seems more like they have a bunch of arduinos connected to the internet, which they call servers.

By the way. Reviewers and streamer get their access 6 days in advance.
https://twitter.com/jasonschreier/status/1681838136807108609

The promised 3 day early access for preorders is of course impossible.
Lets see if they will let customers preload the finished game which is already on the server...

At least I can download in peace then, without millions of others downloading too.

I won't spoil anything, promise wink

And I hate that I'm not able to see it like you do. Your life seems way more relaxed than mine.

Ah well, it has it's perks getting older, I guess. Plus having real life interfer. I'm looking forward to the game, but I waited two years (since then I did early access), so I'm ok with waiting a bit longer. And maybe then the first patch will already be out (if necessary) and maybe the first mods (I love the Basquet of Equipment and KittyTails hair and faces - and have lowkey hope to be able to start with them, though I hope, the armor varitety will be better in the finished game)

It’s gonna be midnight somewhere!

I don’t quite understand what the stress is about. BG3 will hardly be the biggest and most downloaded game in the history of steam, no?

Of course it's always midnight somewhere. That's exactly the point.

There's 24 midnights each day around the globe. That way all those downloads would be spread out.
Currently watching a WolfheartFPS video and he said that even for early access release Steams servers couldn't handle the load. We have more people wanting to download since then, so it's only getting worse if everyone starts to download the exact same minute.
Spread it out? Not much of a problem anymore. But of course that's costing Steam money they are not willing to spend because capitalism.

So ...
We agree that there is no point in complaining about it on Larian forum, rather than some Steam one?

Hey, no fair. First of all, Larian could try to change that time, second of all, even if I were fully naked throwing poo at people on this board, I'd be better behaved still than the Steam boards. Those are a some kind of post apocalyptic wasteland. O_O
