And I mean, a lot of stuff in that book is either random or straight up insulting to the characters. (Not Edwin though, that one I find only weird.)
I admit I found the Bodhi and Irenicus stuff a bit disrespectful.
Their story had meaning and closure. There isn't a single reason to bring them back.
But on the other hand, I quite like that they brought back Sarevok.
Sarevok was a man who had everything.
Money, beauty, power, love and inheritance of god in his veins.
However, he lost everything and spent the rest of his life trying unsuccessfully to fill the void that was left in him.
(Practically all of his possible endings in ToB.)
I can picture him quite vividly as an old and broken man.
I think if someone offered him everything he lost again, he wouldn't hesitate for a minute.
