From someone who plays a lot of Turn based RPGs but not DnD, this was kind of alarming to me as well. I just finished basically my 2nd playthrough.

One thing that helped me a lot is using the heck out of Bless on Shadowheart. There is also a staff in the tower in the Underdark that buffs Bless even further. it makes a massive difference. Bard helps a lot as well as they have a bonus action they can use on a party member to buff their hit roll. There is also an awesome low level spell called Faerie Fire. It's an AOE debuff if you wanted to not use bless, or your Blessers concentration is taken and you want to use someone else's. It's a debuff on the enemy which let's you roll a 2nd hit die and take the best. So it's more potent than bless in terms of increasing hit% but The AEO isn't that big which makes it a bit less usable than just give bless to your whole squad quite easily.

Guiding Bolt, also from Shadowheart helps too. I cast the heck out of it. Awesome damage but it also gives advantage on the next attack roll. So nice to line it up when you see a heeavy hitter going next.
