I am planning on playing this for my first character as well and have been reading up on it. As with any Ranger, Dexterity, Wisdom, and Constitution are the most important stats. Assassin also uses these, so they overlap. Many people select Drow but I’m planning to use Wood Elf for the free stealth and fleet of foot. Archery fighting style. I’m planning to start with 5 levels of Ranger Gloom Stalker to get subclass features, Ability boost at level 4, and then extra attack at level 5. I’ll then switch to at least 3 levels of Rogue Assassin to get the subclass features. The next 4 levels will all be in either Gloom Stalker or Assassin. I haven’t decided yet. Each has its advantages. Gloom Stalker gets more subclass features at higher levels that are good. On the other hand, the Rogue sneak attack dice keep climbing with more levels. I’ll make this decision probably more on roleplay/gameplay. This character is an invisible sniper that takes out the toughest opponents on the first round and then hopefully disappears again and repeats.
