This is standard practice for any sexual scenes in media these days. It gives the actors an advocate so everyone has an understanding of what the scene requires, the camera angles, the level of contact, and it protects the actors from being pressured into something they didn't agree to.

Genuine question since I don't really know. Do they use motion capture for the scenes?

We know they've used mo-cap for some scenes, if not most. I'd assume sex scenes would be included. Yes, probably even the bear (although not portrayed by an actual bear).

I think so? iirc Witcher 3 uses the mocap for sexual scenes.

Fun fact:
Larian used an animal actor for mocapping the bear scenes, and they had an intimacy coordinator for THAT scene. I’m pretty sure this was the bear actor: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brody_the_Bear

I wonder if the intimacy coordinators read Niara's critiques of the intimacy scenes and what they thought about it.

You’ve heard of Interview with a Vampire,
Now get ready for the bear’s side of the story.

I hope so. I might have butted heads with them on more than one occasion, but they gave some really solid feedback there. I hope Larian took it into consideration.

I highly doubt so.

Intimacy coordinators work at ... coordinating with the actors and actresses, the other people on set (camera, sound, motion-captors technicians, etc), and the creators, to make sure the whole process of shooting a sex scene is not too awkward, uncomfortable or worse for the actors and actresses. Intimacy coordinator are not the writers, directors or choreographers. Actually, to quote Wikipedia :

According to Intimacy Directors International, a nonprofit organization founded in 2016 by Alicia Rodis, Tonia Sina, and Siobhan Richardson that advocates for the function, an intimacy coordinator is expected to ensure that:
  • all staff and actors are aware of the context of the intimacy as part of the story,
  • communication about the intimacy takes place among participants and avenues for reporting harassment are available,
  • actors continually consent to all scenes of intimacy,
  • all scenes of intimacy are performed according to a previously agreed-to choreography, and
  • actors are encouraged to mark the end of each intimate scene with a moment to signal the return to real-life interaction.

There is no reason to assume that the actors, actresses and intimaticy coordinator on BG3 had any significant input in the creative/designing process, or access to the feedback from players.

So the remaining questions are : did the sex scene writers, choreographers and directors receive Niara's feedback (or player feedback in general), or was feedback processed by system designers only ? And if the sex scene creators received the feedback, did they rework the sex scenes to make it look less like cheap porn ? We'll know soon enough.

As a side (and off-topic) note, the same sort of questions would apply to the cinematography in general. We had a player once who made a good post explaining how and why the scene of the skirmish at the Grove's Gate was very poorly shot. Again, we'll see if that sort of feedback was taken on board when we get our hands on the full release version.

I remember reading that Larian hired some cinematography experts to add extra polish to the cutscenes - wish I could remember where I read that.

I read this: Baldur's Gate 3 has reportedly used the services of intimacy coordinators for its romantic scenes, which is one of the first cases in game development.

I'm no expert, but it seems like Larian is unusual in gaming in this regard.

I hope it becomes more of a standard the more games use mocap for their intimate scenes.

Well THAT didn't help.
Writing is great, acting is poor. Thats the problem though, teaching a 3D artist and programmer how a human body acts in a movie like situation. Even with motion capture. They over do it.
For the Witcher 3...I think the acting/cinematography is in general better than BG3, no overacting, movements are slower more natural (less is more). You can tell the animators got more and more experience from the previous Witcher games they made. BG3 looks better (Though I do not like the bright color pallet used).

It just reminded me of the bowl of goat's milk that old Winthrop used to put outside his door every evening for the dust demons. He said the dust demons could never resist goat's milk, and that they would always drink themselves into a stupor and then be too tired to enter his room..
